POULTRY PRODUCERS
NEED FOR ORGANISATION By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, February 7. A meeting of registered poultrykeepers, convened by the Papanui branch of the New Zealand Poultry Producers’ Federation at the invitation of the New Zealand Poultry Board, was held in the Papanui Town Hall last night. There was an attendance of about 35 producers, who were addressed by Mr S. F. Marshall the member for Canterbury and Westland on the Poultry Board. Mr. Marshall explained the organisation of the federation, and its machinery. The board that had been established by the Act was essentially a producers’ board, but it could do its work only with the full support of the producers. In recent months five branches of the federation had been formed in and round Christchurch, and it was hoped that these branches would grow to be a real power, and would be able to give the board a lead in matters of interest of producers. By adopting a wise export policy, by which the number of eggs sent away had steadily grown, the board had established prices, thus protecting the producers. When asked about the powers of the board, Mr Marshall said the passing of regulations had been considered by the board. It had discussed allembracing regulations dealing with the marketing of eggs and with chilled eggs, but it had been realised that before any regulations could be made the board would have to be supported by the producers of the Dominion. The board itself had no power to make regulations, but had to go to the Minister for Agriculture. Mr. F. C. Brown, chief Government inspector of poultry, also spoke, commending the works of the board, and advised producers to give it their utmost support. Mr. C. G. Cussen, poultry inspector for the South Island, also stressed the value of organisation of the industry.
