PRODUCE MARKETS

SOUTH CANTERBURY There is a good demand for all green feed lines in the South Canterbury grain, seed and produce markets this week and this is mainly due to weather conditions throughout the Dominion. Threshing is now in full swing in this district, but yields are not coming up to expectations. Crops which earlier in the season showed prospects of turning out Very well are realising from 30 to 35 bushels to the acre, and the drop is attributed to the sudden ripening owing to excessive heat and the fact that nor’-west winds have considerably shaken crops. Any good lines of milling quality have been readily accepted at current prices which are: Velvet 4/4 a bushel f.0.b., Hunters 4/2, and Tuscan 4/-. There has been a very good demand for fowl wheat, the nominal quotation being 3/9 a bushel on trucks. A and B Garton oats have increased In value during the week, A’s being quoted at 2/- a bushel on trucks and B’s 1/10. There has been inquiry for Algerians at 1/8 a bushel on trucks. Dark heavy Duns are worth 2/3 and light Duns from 1/8 to 1/9 a bushel. Cape barley is quoted at 2/3 a bushel on trucks and Chevalier (contract) at The value of chaff is £2/15/- to £3 a ton on trucks, according to stations. Owing to the higher price being paid for fowl wheat there is a good inquiry for all undergrade lines of partridge peas at 2/11 a bushel on trucks. There is a good demand for April-May-June delivery potatoes at £4/10/on trucks. It appears that the dry conditions in the North Island have apparently affected crops there, and South Island potatoes are wanted. It is some time since Auckland has inquired for early potatoes to such an extent.

Italian and Western Wolths are inquired for at 2/3 a bushel on trucks. Ryegrass is not meeting with such a good demand, nominal quotations being 2/- to 2/3 a bushel on trucks. Cowgrass is worth 8d to 9d per lb, and white clover 6d to Bd. Brown Top is inquired for but very little is offering. The seed position generally in this district is that farmers are threshing wheat and oats and so far there are not many lines of grass seed offering. At present there is a good demand for all seed lines. This usually extends till March, but after that date the inquiry eases off until September or October.
