BRIGHT DAYS AT SCOUT JAMBOREE
NEW ZEALAND'S DISPLAY APPLAUDED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 4. 7.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 4. The New Zealand Scouts had their day on the Jamboree arena to-day, when they gave a Maori display of songs and dances, which delighted thousands of spectators. On each day the feature of the arena events has been the national pageant presented by representatives of the various countries. The New Zealanders’ effort was given with great fervour and has been one of the best features on the programme so far. The enthusiasm of the boys has now reached a high pitch. The weather has been excellent and the health of the boys is good. All will regret the end of a great gathering.
Lord Baden Powell (the Chief Scout) has been greatly touched by the warmth of the boys’ feeling for him and Lady Baden Powell, as typified in the Indian Scouts’ greeting when he toured their camp: “May you live for a thousand years, our beloved chief,” cried the Indian leader as Lord Baden Powell left.
A stirring address on the value of the great Scout movement was given by the Governor of South Australia (Sir Winston Dugan). He said the Scouts were a great force for international understanding and the peace of the world. Here boys of all nations were meeting together and extending the hand of friendship to those who should not only write condemning war, but should look around here for an example of how to get good work done. At the Scout beach sports. Boon and Snelling (New Zealand) were first and second in their heat in the 100 yards free style under 16 years, and Bevin first in his heat for a similar distance for competitors under 18 years.
