TIMARU WOOL SALE

BIG REDUCTION IN CHEQUE TOTAL OF £83,008 Although the prices realised at the first wool sale of the season in South Canterbury, which was held in Timaru on December 17. were considered satisfactory when compared with sales held in other parts of the Dominion, the total cheque for growers shows a remarkable drop compared with the amount distriblted after the initial sale last season. That there would be a big reduction in the amount of money to be distributed was only to be expected, but it was not anticipated that the loss of the district as a result of the drop in values would reach £110,797/16 2. At the sale held in December, the total number of bales offered was 8417. as against 10.802 on December 16, 1933. The quantity sold last month was 8067 bales, as against 10.684 at the first sale twelve months ago. The total value of the wool sold last month was £83.008/15/2. the cheque for 1933 being £193.806/11/4.

On these figures, the average price per lb. last month was 7.317 d. the average price in December. 1933. being 13.077 d. The price per bale worked out at £lO/5/10 last month, compared with £lB/2/9 at the first sale in 1933. The second wool sale in Timaru is to be held on March 13. There is no limit for the sale, and it is expected that the catalogues will be fairly big.
