RADIO INTERFERENCE

To the Editor ot " The Timaru Herald " Sir,—l am pleased to see that others besides ms'self are voicing their protests at the continued interference which one has to contend with in the radio field of Timaru. However, like myself, these listeners and listeners as a whole, will be more than disappointed to find when getting down to tin tacks, that the supposed regulations for suppressing radio interference are more or less ineffective. We were ied to believe that when the regulations came into force, stringent actions would be enforced against offenders; but alas, we find that such is not the case, despite the radio inspector’s words of encouragement that all will be well, the noises still continue to aggravate. I w'onder how many listeners have carefully read these regulations which are so framed that loopholes for noncompliance by the Department simply abound. It is all very well for the radio inspector to say all complaints are investigated. No doubt they are, but the remedy is what listeners desire and want. It doesn’t take very elaborate equipment to find the chief offenders, whom the inspector knows as well as I do, but unfortunately they still continue in our midst. No. Mr Editor, the regulations are simply a “wash-out,” and were only gazetted to keep listeners quiet, whilst the authorities, with tongues in their cheeks broadcast a prayer that the new IYA and increased power at the other stations, would solve the problem and over-ride interferences. It is high time the listeners of Timaru rallied round the local Radio Club with their moral support in the Club’s efforts to abate this nuisance. But probably more stringent methods are needed, as so far ail efforts to persuade the authorities to give sympathetic hearing to the Club’s appeal (not only

on this issue alone), have met with very poor response indeed. However. I do hope my letter on the subject of radio interference has borne some good, and that the authorities will do their duty.—l am, etc., FED UP LISTENER. Timaru, January 4.
