BED-MAKING AS AN ART

THE RIGHT WAY There is a right and a wrong way to make a bed. You should always buy sheets large enough to allow at least half a yard tuck in on all sides. First, the lower sheet is put on, with wide hem at the top and with the right side up—tucked in carefully, and with mitred corners. Comers are mitred by bringing the corner of the sheet round the corner of the mattress, box fashion. Meantime, have the side part of the sheet up on the mattress out of the way, to drop down after the diagonal corners are tucked in. Turn the tuck-in part of the corner under the side of the mattress, finishing the mitred corner; then bring down the side of the sheet under the mattress. The lower sheet is mitred at all four corners, while the upper sheet and blanket are done only at the foot. The upper sheet should be put on right side down and with wide hem at top, which brings the turn-back of the sheet right side up. This turn-back will protect the blanket. and economy teaches that it is better to cut the pair of blankets apart, bind them, and use separately. Finally, throw over the bedspread and smooth out flat.
