SUPREME COURT

PRISONERS SENTENCED By TelegrapU—Press Association WELLINGTON, December 19. Prisoners sentenced by the Chief Justice were:— James William Burton (.20) and Charles Arthur Revell (21), breaking, entering and theft, two charges, two years reformative detention. | Rangi Martin, forgery, six months’ hard labour, cumulative with the sentence being served. Neil Campbell, burglary, 18 months’ imprisonment. Herbert Monteroy Tansley, theft of unemployment funds at Waipukurau, two years’ reformative treatment. Christian Mathieson Gronn, with respect to the same transaction, 18 months, reformative treatment. James Rodney Reardon, sending a telegram containing a threat to kill, ordered to come up if called within 12 months. In Reardon’s case it was urged that his intention was to stop the woman drinking, and that he had no intention of carrying out the threat. The Judge took the view that it was not a case for sending the prisoner tto gaol, but he warned him that he must behave. The prisoner has to pay the costs of the prosecution. With regard to the Waipukurau prisoners, eloquent pleas were made on the grounds of the pressure on both men financially, but the Judge said it was quite plain that under the circumstances such as the present, the benefit of the probation could not be extended to either prisoner. While counsel was speaking the Judge pointed out that there were really a series of offences over a period of 10 months, including forgery. The Judge remarked that Tansley, who was the Town Clerk, really drew Gronn in.
