BURNSIDE SALE FAT CATTLE DEARER By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, December 19. As is usual at the Christmas, the fat lamb pens were filled to capacity and there was a good representation in the fat cattle, sheep and pig sections at Burnside to-day. The entry of 235 fat cattle was barely sufficient for a double market. Some really outstanding consignments were included and the market firmed consistently at an average rise of 10/- to 17/- a head, with a slightly smaller appreciation for the lower grades. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold to £ll/7/6, prime heavy £B/7/6 to £9/17/6, light and medium £6/12/6 to £7/17/6, prime heavy young cows and heifers to £7/12/6, prime £5/2/6 to £6/2/6, light and medium £217/6 to £4/12/6. The store cattle section was poorly supported, a small entry of 118 head being submitted to auction. This included a very small percentage of steers and a larger supply of vealers than usual. Prices for all classes had an easing tendency. The dairy entry totalled 12 head, and little interest was displayed by buyers. Sales were difficult to effect. The fat sheep entry totalled 1236 head, and included a good proportion of heavy wethers. Country butchers operated and freezing competition was in evidence throughout for all the lighter grades. The sale opened firm at last week’s rates and the demand was steady to the close. Extra prime heavy shorn wethers sold to 27/3, prime heavy 24/6 to 25/9, medium 22/6 to 23/9, light down to 20/6, extra prime heavy young shorn ewes to 22/-, prime heavy 18/- to 19/6, medium 15/- to 16/6, light down to 14/-.

A number of heavy lambs were in attractive order, but generally the entry showed the effect of the long spell of dry weather. Exporters had supplies on hand and competition from this source was not keen, but their bidding helped to keep values fairly steady at schedule rates. Extra prime heavy lambs sold to 27/6, prime 21/- to 24/and light and medium 15/6 to 20/-. The fat pig entry numbered 121. The sale opened under keen competition and satisfactory prices ruled throughout. Heavy baconers sold to £3/10/-, and best porkers to £2/14/-. The store pig entry numbered 121, and the yarding was readily disposed of, late rates being fully maintained.
