SWIMMING

SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE MONTHLY MEETING The South Canterbury Swimming Centre held its monthly meeting cn Tuesday events. Present—Mr H. li. Fraser (presiding), Mesdames K. Mayo and B. Morrison, Messrs T. Elder, S. Lyttle, W. Sutherland, F. Carter, J. C. ; Hayhurst and the secretary (Mr A. E. Rippin). It was decided to support the scheme devised by Mr F. G. Dunne, the New Zealand Association’s treasurer, for assisting educational work. The West End Club wrote forwarding a list of swimmers who had entered for events at the recent carnival and failed to appear or pay their entrance fees. A number of competitors had been barred from competing through ilness, but in their case no complaint was being made. The president said he thought it was time that some effort was made to have the practice of promiscous entering and failing to appear or pay stopped. He was pleased to see that the West End Club had taken the first step towards stopping it. It rested now with the Temuka Club to forward a list of defaulters after its carnival and then I the Centre could consider a means of dealing with the offenders. It was decided to keep a defaulters' list, entering the names in hand and any future defaulters thereon, it being incumbent on defaulters to make an explanation to the club concerned to avoid being filed. The Temuka Club was granted permission to hold a carnival on February 21 and the Waimate Club on January 31. The entertainment committee re- j ported that it had drawn up a pro- j gramme of entertainment for the National Intermediate and Junior Championship competitors. It was proposed to have a civic reception tendered to the visitors on their arrival on January 18, a picnic at the Temuka River on January 20, a motor drive on the following day and a visit to Bruce’s factory on Tuesday. There would be swimming on Saturday afternoon and Monday and Tuesday evenings, and the carnival would end with a ball in the Bay Hall on the Tuesday. The recommendations were adopted, and power to make further arrangements was left with the committee. For the billetting committee Mr Elder reported that billets for 30 visitors had been secured, and that another 20 would be required. The president stated that Miss J. Brewer had visited him recently with an offer to coach any of the young swimmers training for the national meeting, and as she was highly competent he thought her offer should oe accepted. It was decided to thank Miss Brewer and arrange for some girl swimmers to be in her charge.
