A remarkable mountaineering record has been established by Mr Rod Syme, of Hawera, club captain of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club, who has made his 100th ascent of Mount Egmont (8260 ft). With the exception of Mr J. Blythe, of Ohakune, who has made more than 100 ascents of Ruapehu, Mr Syme’s feat is outstanding so far as amateur climbing is concerned.

The new pneumatic tram buses now in use in Christchurch have a fine appearance, and are roomy and most comfortable to ride in. They are solely handled by the operator. There is no doubt these buses point the way to the day when tram rails will be lifted and the roads consequently improved for the general motorist

A traveller who has just returned from the North Island reports that the country, generally, had the appearance of being in need of rain as pastures were drying, giving the fields a brownish tinge in almost all areas. In the latter part of the week, refreshing showers improved the position in the Auckland district. Wellington, however, was still badly in need of a good rain.

At 2 p.m. to-morrow in the mart Morton and Co. will sell by auction a brick bungalow, also corner section situated LeCren and Church Streets. These properties are being sold on account of deceased estates, and it :s the trustees’ desire to wind up the estate so very low reserve prices will be placed on them.

At 7.30 p.m. on Friday on the premises of the Dominion Motors Ltd, Stafford Street, A. N. Oakey and Co. will hold a sale of 20 new Dominion radio sets on account of the firm, who are giving up this branch of their business. The sets range from console models to mantel models, and are all new stock.

To-morrow in their mart Morton and Co will sell a huge quantity of furnitare and furnishings, including a splendid piano, also a large quantity of bed linen and sundries. Everything is now on view and in first class order and for sale without reserve.

Features of the St. Andrew's gymkhana on January 19, will be children’s tricycle races and sheaf tossing, cock-fighting and pillow-fighting events for men.

A meeting of shareholders of the Pacific Starr Bowkett Building Society was held in Dunedin last night when the chairman of directors, Mr J. B. Shacklocft, presided over a large attendance of members. The free ballot of £IOOO in No. 8 Group was drawn by cluster No. 326, held by a Dunedin shareholder. The sale in Group 7 was only partly disposed of as no bids were offered. The sale in Group 8 realised satisfactory prices, the purchaser being an Ashburton shareholder. The chairman in extending the season’s greetings to the members mentioned that the next appropriation would take place in February.

The Byrd expedition ships Bear of Oakland and Jacob Ruppert are now preparing for the next voyage to the Antarctic. Both vessels are at Dunedin, and the Bear of Oakland is taking in bunker coal. This W'eek the ships will load a large quantity oi stores for the use of the party now on the ice barrier. The Bear of Oakland will leave Dunedin on December 26, and the Jacob Ruppert is scheduled to sail on January 12. On arrival at the ice barrier the members of the expedition will be embarked and the equipment loaded on the ships for the return voyage to New Zealand and America.

As an indication of the intense heat, which has been experienced in Rotorua during the last week it is reported that a score of fish in the Government Gardens ponds have been killed. These ponds are shallow, and the heat of the sun made the water so warm that the fish sickened and died.

Doctors in England and Germany are using a new anaesthetic which is injected into the blood; it may replace ether in certain types of operations. It is called Evlpan, and produces a deep , normal sleep within thirty seconds. The operation can be started immediately, and the patient awakes without any unpleasant after-effects.

The United States heads the list in the number of radio sets; it has almost as many as Europe. Statistics just compiled by the United States Department of Commerce give the radio census of the United States as 18,500,000 sets as compared with a world total of 42,540,239. Europe has 18,594,605.
