THE WEATHER

Dominion Meteorologist General situation. —The anticyclone over New Zealand is moving slowly eastwards while a deep depression is advancing from south-eastern Australia on to the Tasman Sea. Winds.—North-easterly to northerly prevailing moderate at first hut gradually freshening, later reaching gale force about and south of Cook Strait. Seas (New Zealand waters).—Rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits, rising later south of Cape Egmont; elsewhere smooth to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea —Moderate but increasing north-east to north winds and rising seas. Weather.—Fair, warm and sultry generally, but some isolated local rains are likely with thunder at places; conditions becoming unsettled to-morrow in the western and southern portions of the South Island with rain setting in. Mr F. It. Wooles Wind. Variable and moderate breezes. Weather.—For the most part fair and warm; occasional thunder showers in isolated localities are not unlikely. Conditions in Timaru The recent warm weather conditions continued yesterday when Timaru was favoured with another sunny, summer day. Toward mid-afternoon dark clouds banked up to the south and the oppressive heat threatened a thunder storm, but while rain fell for about half an hour it was little more than sufficient to wet the pavements and the storm passed round the hills. The sun was shining a few minutes later and for the rest of the afternoon and evening the temperature was warm.
