HIGH SCHOOL BOARD
To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir.—ln your issue of the 15th inst enclosed paragraph appears. I am sure many of your readers would be interested to know the nature of the proposed amendments. I have been told by an official authority that they include a proposal to reduce the number of the members elected by the electors of Timaru under the municipal franchise. As these representatives are the only members elected on a democratic principle and are already outnumbered by appointed or nominated members of the Board, the proposal will be regarded by many as distinctly reactionary, and it is to hoped that our legislators will carefully scrutinize the Bill w 7 hen before Parliament. Some of your readers too, would like to know if the Board is violating the letter, as well as the spirit of the Act, in not taking steps to fill the vacancy on the Board caused, several months ago, by the lamented death of Mrs B. H. Low. As a most important appointment has shortly to be made by the Board, more publicity in these and other matters, concerning the welfare of the High Schools would be appreciated.—l am etc. GEO. T. ROLLER. Timaru, December 16. Enclosure. The Director of Education (Mr N. T. Lambourne) wrote stating that he regretted that the Department had not been successful in securing the passing last session of the amending legislation to the Timaru High School Act. However, as Parliament would be reassembling in February or March, it was still hoped to have the proposed amendments enacted in time to become effective before the next Municipal elections which are to take place on May 1, 1935.
