Owing to the crop on the range interfering with the targets a drawn handicap sweepstake will be fired next Saturday over the 500 and 600 yards , ranges. Relief Work: The following work was carried out for local bodies by relief workers under No. 5 scheme during last week:— Oamaru Borough Council—Top-dress-ing and cleaning streets, 20 men, wages paid £25/16/3; top-dressing streets and footpath formation, 21 men, £2B'l/3; j excavating, draining, and levelling rej serve C. 67 men. £B3 17 6; gardens and j reserves. 44 men. £63 B'9; cleaning out j water race, 3 men. £3/15/0. Unemployment Committee: At the weekly meeting of the Oamaru 1 Unemployment Committee, the Mayor i <Mr M. F. Cooney) presided. The Labour Bureau officer (Mr J. G. Adair) ■ reported that at the beginning of last : week there were 384 registered unem- ; ployed. Since then 15 new applies - : tions were received. Fifteen were given private employment, and four names were removed, leaving a total of 376 at the end of last week. As this was the last meeting for the year. the Mayor took the opportunity of thanking Mr Adair for his assistance to unemployment In the district, and extended seasonal greetings to the members of the committee, and these were reciprocated by Mr W. Forrester. The next meeting will be held on January 14. Angling Club: Three casting competitions were held under the auspices of the North Otago , | Angling Club, and some very good work was witnessed. There were good entries in the three competitions, which were keenly contested. Messrs M. S. Holmes and I. Chalmers acted as judges. In the Flycasting Accuracy Competition M. S. Holmes won the aggregate cup. and the winners of the distance and bait-casting were T. O. Fox (Timaru) and W. Thomas respectively. The following are the detailed results:— Accuracy Fly-casting—M. S. Holmes I. T. O. Fox 2. Fox and Thomas had five points each at the end of the first round. These two had to cast off, and again secured five points each, but in the third round Fox proved the winner. Distance Flv-casting.—T. O. Fox, 181 ft. 31in„ 1; W. Thomas, 164 ft. 2in„ 2. Bait Casting.—W. Thomas, 253 ft. 9in. 1; K. King, 246 ft. 4in.. 2. A Bare-fly Competition was also held on the Kakanui River on Saturday night. There were 16 competitors. The river was in splendid condition, but a mist over the river spoilt the night’s fishing. The competition was won by C. Andrew with one fish, the weight of which was 21b 750 z. I. Chalmers was second, having secured only one fish of lib. and W. Thomas was next with one fish of lOoz. W. Hanna, with a fish of 21b 7=oz, and J. Lindsay with one fish of lib were too late for the weigh-in. The Waitaki River is very clear at the present time, and is perhaps too much so for good fishing. Several anglers visited the river over the weekend. but only mediocre bags were obtained.

Power Supply Problem; In his monthly report to the Waitaki Power Board, the engineer (Mr I. Dalmer) said that inquiry has again been made regarding supply to residents in the South Canterbury Power Board’s area on the north side of the Waitaki River below Hakataramea. Suggestions have been made that fresh efforts should be made towards a solution of the problem of giving supply to these residents, and further information has been provided; also inquiry as to guarantee and financing. Teacher Farewelled: At the conclusion of the break-up ceremony of the Teaneraki School occasion was taken to recognise suitably the services to the school and district by Miss J. O. Kidd, mistress, who is being transferred to a similar position at Miller’s Fat School. Miss Kidd has endeared herself to the children during the seven years period she has been connected with the school. Mr W. Rowland, chairman of the School Committee, referred to Miss Kidd's work as a teacher and dwelt at length on her work generally and in the district. Mr R. N. Finlay. headmaster, in glowing terms complimented Miss Kidd highly on her influence on the school as a whole and on the results obtained throughout her term at Enfield. Mr D. Cornick, secretary of the School Committee, also spoke. Miss Kidd was then called upon to receive a handsome gold wristlet watch suitably engraved from the parents and residents of Enfield. At this stage Mr D. Elliot on behalf of the Enfield Tennis Club, also presented Miss Kidd with two volumes as a mark of appreciation of her association with the club. The recipient suitably replied for all the expressions of goodwill to her and concluded with exhortation to the scholars to which she had become so attached.
