HOPES EXCEEDED

EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS AUCKLAND, December 18. Bishop Liston, who returned to-day after attending the Eucharistic Congress in Melbourne, said it exceeded the high hopes of its promoters. The cordial friendliness of the civic authorities and the general public was one of the important factors in its success. The r official reception of the Cardinal Legate in the Town Hall by the Premier and the Lord Mayor was one of the most dignified and happy functions he had ever seen. It was felt that the friendliness of all sections of the community would do much for the public life of Australia, and the striking manifestations of religious faith had made a deep impression on all. Bishop Liston mentioned that both the Papal Legate. Cardinal Me Roy, :nd the Archbishop of Liverpool. Dr. Downey, were anxious to visit New Zealand. and he thought it possible that they would do so when returning to England.
