HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD

COMMITTEE REPORTS The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital Board was held yesterday. Present: Mr E. Macdonald (chairman), Mrs B. Hewson, Messrs G. Dash, C. Ley, R. W. Simpson, G. Saunders, G. D. Selbie, H. J. Clark, B. R. Macdonald and J. T. Hay. Question of Representation. The Director-General of Health wrote stating that as the county and borough elections would coincide in 1935. it was desirable to effect any alteration in the representation at the next elections. It would be observed that the Timaru Borough’s share of representation on a Board of 12 members was 3.792, as against three members as at present, while the combined boroughs of Geraldine and Temuka with representatives on the Board were entitled only to 0.552. For the purpose of placing the present representations on a more equitable basis two alternatives suggested themselves, firstly, to combine Timaru, Geraldine and Temuka boroughs with a total representation of four members, or, secondly. to increase the membership of the Board to 13, allotting four representatives to Timaru Borough. The chairman said that he thought the present representation was satisfactory. He thought 13 an unlucky number. Whichever way it was worked. it would result in fractions. Mr Clark said that he did not see that there was anything to be gained b3 r altering the present representation. It was agreed to reply stating that the Board was of the opinion that it was not desirable to alter the present representation. Old People’s Home. The master of the Old People's Home (Mr E. Laverty) reported that the general health of the inmates had been very good. The Salvation Ai>my entertained the inmates with a concert, which was much appreciated.
