“Choirs should never forget that they are part of the congregation,” said Dr. Sydney H. Nicholson, formerly organist and master of choristers at Westminster Abbey, in an address to choir members and organists, the “Auckland Star” reports. He said that in no sense were members of the choir performers to the congregation, although they had special duties to perform. Church music was a definite part of the service, and not just a special attraction added to it. There was no place for music that did not heighten the spiritual meaning of the service. A choir must be prepared to serve, and not to display. The music chosen should be the best, and it should be sung as well as it possibly could be by the individual choir. Meeting by chance at a Wellington restaurant they got yarning about diet —and doctors. “It’s seldom I trouble doctors,” laughed one, “but last Christmas I had to. Nerves all to pieces. Doctor asked if I smoked much. Cigarettes, I told him. Four packets a day. He clicked his tongue. ‘Cut ’em out,’ he says. Then he laughed. “Don’t like my prescription?” says he, ‘well, drop the packet cigarettes and roll your own. Use toasted New Zealand. Then you can smoke all you want. No harm in toasted—practically free from nicotine.’ “Well, I took his tip. Nerves quieted down after a bit. Right as rain now! —and I’m saving money. Rolling your own comes a heap cheaper than ready-mades.” “Don’t I know it,” says the other chap. “Roll my own myself. Smoke Desert Gold. Splendid!—and mind you one fresh-rolled cigarette is worth fifty machine-made.” Carried unanimously! There are only five brands of toasted all told—Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Desert Gold and Riverhead Gold. Delicious, all five—and so harmless!
