ITALIAN CRUISER
MESSAGE OF WELCOME Bv Teleeraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. November 17. The Governor-General has sent the following message to the captain of the Italian cruiser Armando Diaz, j which arrived in Wellington this morning:— “I send to you and your officers and the ship’s company, greetings, and a warm welcome to New Zealand. and trust that your stay in this British Dominion will be enjoyable to you all. I regret official engagements necessitate my absence from Wellington for the next few days, but I look forw*ard to meeting you j on Thursday next.—Bledisloe.” j The following reply was received:— “I thank your Excellency very much, also on behalf of my officers j and men, lor your very kind message of welcome. I am sure we shall enjoy our stay in Wellington, and I j will feel honoured to meet your j Excellency next Thurcday.—Captain I Jachino.” The cruiser was thrown open for public inspection from 2 to 5 o’clock. Large crowds took the opportunity of seeing one of the most modern cruisers afloat. During the afternoon the Dunedin and Diomede, which returned to the Dominion last week from Melbourne arrived. As the New Zealand vessels came up the stream the band on the quarterdeck of the Armando Diaz struck up the National Anthem and sailors and sightseers stood to attention.
