INQUIRY ORDERED
USE OF COUNCIL CAR BY COUNCILLOR By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. November 17. The Audit Department has directed that an inquiry shall be made into the circumstances in which one of the Municipal Department’s motor-cars was used to convey Councillor G. T. Thurston to Timaru and back after the meeting of the City Council on October 8. The matter was discussed at the meeting of the council on November 5, when Councillor Thurston stated that he had travelled to Timaru and back in one of the council’s cars at the expense of the council. At the meeting of the council on October 8 the resolution providing for the conversion and the consolidation of the courtcil’s special loans was submitted for confirmation and Councillor Thurston was required to keep an appointment in Timaru early the following morning. In order that he should be present and record his vote at the council meeting on the conversion resolution arrangements were made for him to leave Christchurch for Timaru at an early hour in the morning in one of the Municipal Electricity Department’s motor-cars. It is understood that the attention of the Audit Department was drawn to the matter, and as a result the local audit inspector has received instructions to inquire into the position.
