DO YOU BELIEVE IN FAIRIES? Characters:—Audrey, Jack, Fairy Queen, Elves and Fairies. Scene I: —In nursery. Audrey has a book and is sitting on a chair. Jack is sitting on the mat. Audrey:—Oh, Jack, this is a lovely fairy story! Would you like to read it? Jack:—Fairy story, pooh! Who’d believe that nonsense! Thtre are no fairies, anyway. I don't believe in them! Audrey:—There are fairies! And it isn’t nonsense! Jack:—l don’t want to read your old book. I'd burn it if I could get hold of it. Audrey:—lt’s a lovely story about the fairy queen and all her fairies and— Jack:—Don’t want to hear girls’ silly nonsense! I don’t believe a word of it! Audrey:—Well, there are fairies, anyway. So now please be quiet and let me finish reading this story. Curtain Scene II The two children are asleep in bed. The Fairy Queen and the fairies and elves come in. Fairy .Queen:—Where is this child who says there are no fairies? He shall be punished severely for what he has said. Ist Fairy:—Yes, my Queen. 2nd Fairy:—Certainly, your Majesty. (The elves are on Jack’s bed pulling him about. He wakes up). Jack:—(Sleepily) Why did you wake me? Go away! I want to go to sleep. Queen:—No, we shall not go away. All naughty boys who do not believe in fairies get the same punishment. Jack:—(Crying) Oh, let me go! I don't want to be punished. Queen: —We shall not let you go. (The fairies begin to sing:— Who believes in fairies, Dancing in the dew? Who believes in fairies— Naughty Jack, do you?) Jack:— (Crying) Oh, I’ll never say I don’t believe in fairies again. Let me go. Oh, do! Queen: —But first you must faithfully promise you believe in us. Jack:—l promise. Queen: —Say you’re sorry for all you have said. Jack:—l’m sorry. Queen:—Then let him go.
