THE PIPE BAND CONTEST

To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir,—Would you kindly allow me, finally, through your columns, in fairness to myself, to correct the impression created by one or two of your correspondents in their unfounded assertions that I have condemned pipe bands as “heathenish?” A reference to my initial letter will show that X merely expressed my personal dislike for both brass and pipe combinations. May I at the same time suggest to Mr Paterson that when he knows the difference between a fundamental bass and a pedal bass, he will know at any rate, one difference between an organ and a bagpipe? X would also like to remind Mr Duncan that joint contests of pipe and brass bands have only been held previously in the large central cities where accommodation and funds were obtainable. If he cannot see the difference between, say, Wellington and Timaru from both these aspects, he is indeed blind, and I fail to see why he should endeavour to pass that blindness on to your readers. The offer of the Pipe Band management to assist the brass bands in their competitions is indeed ludicrous. They say, in effect, “We’re going to open fire on you, but will be pleased to assist your wounded.” Merely adding insult to injury!—l am, etc., J. D. PARKIN. Timaru, November 16.
