THE ROYAL SHOW

CENTRALISATION DESIRED The opinion that the Royal Agricultural Society’s annual show should be held alternately in Palmerston North and Christchurch was expressed by Mr A. S. Elworthy at a meeting of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. Mr Elworthy said he was opposed to the present system of holding the show in five different districts, and he was not in favour of the Association subscribing to the Royal Society unless the show were centralised in each Island. The secretary stated that the Royal Society had increased its subscription from one to two per cent, of associations’ memberships. The chairman (Dr. P. R. Woodhouse) said that the system of holding the show in five centres was decided on last year. Mr C. L. Orbell contended that the present system was not suitable to exhibitors. A breeder who sent his stock to Auckland one year had to send them right down to Invercargill the next year. Breeders did not favour that. If they could send their stock to Christchurch one year and Palmerston North the following year, they would be able to support the Royal Show regularly. Mr W. H. Orbell suggested that a notice of motion be sent to the annual meeting of the Royal Society next June. Mr T. R. Rhodes pointed out that that could not be done unless the Association became a member by subscribing. After further discussion it was decided not to subscribe to the Royal Society, on the grounds that the Association was opposed to the show being held in five centres.
