RACING & TROTTING

Dec. 1, 3—Nelson T.C. Dec. B—New Brighton T.C. Dec. B—Te Aroha T.C. New Zealand Cup on Saturday. Melbourne Cup next Tuesday. Special trains will run from Timaru to Christchurch and back on each day of Carnival Week, except Derby day at Riccarton, . Dundee failed again at Wellington, and has now lost nearly all his friends. Judged on his form in the Caulfield Guineas, Radiant Star seems to be well sold at I7oogns. The Invercargill apprentice W. Cotton is to ride Sungem in the New Zealand Cup. Heather Glow passed a veterinary examination for transfer to Victoria, but the sale fell through at the last minute. The Victoria Derby will be run on Saturday. Theo is a hot favourite for this race as well as for the Melbourne Cup. The Sydney lightweight, J. O’Sullivan, who won the last Melbourne Cup on Hall Mark, is to steer Theo in this year’s race. Satin King may start in one of the sprint races at Addington next week, but is unlikely to be given a two-mile assignment. He is likely to be the only non-acceptor for the Trotting Cup. Worthy Light is assessed at 4.28, and will have to win a race at Addington to become eligible for the Auckland Trotting Cup. He is one horse that backers can support with confidence that they will get a run. In some quarters Tizzy is being discussed as a Stewards’ Handicap possibility. The age of miracles is past. In a hack race Tizzy would receive 201 b. or more from Cherry Queen, and both are on 7.0 in the Stewards. F. Shaw is being generally credited with the ownership of the three-year-old half-brother to Severe, which he has in his stable. The owner of the PombakDrastic youngster is Mr T. T. Lister. Journal, the Caulfield Cup winner, was handicapped at 7.7 in the Melbourne Cup, 61b. less than his Caulfield Cup weight. With the maximum penalty of 101 b., his Melbourne Cup impost is 8.3, only 41b. more than he carried to victory at Caulfield. ! Gold Trail is the only New Zealand Cup candidate who became liable to a rehandicap after the declaration of weights. It is curious that only one horse appears to have won the Cup with a penalty, this being Sunart, who was raised 51b. for a win at Otaki. i A year ago one felt confident of his ability to pick the New Zealand Cup in two—Polydora and Palantua. Polydora dropped out at the final payment, and Palantua duly won. This year the task is much more difficult, and half-a-dozen appear to have equal chances. The Auckland Racing Club has followed the lead of the C.J.C., and in future races which were formerly run under hack conditions (£250 and £SOO limits) will be restricted to horses which have not won a race worth £2OO or races of an aggregate value of £4OO to the winner. Eleven trotting clubs have held meeting's so far this season, and totalisator investments in the aggregate have shown a decrease of nearly £20,000 compared with last season’s fixtures. At 26 racing club meetings so far held, there has been an increase of £15,000. Nightly was originally handicapped at 9.0 in the Melbourne Cup, 21b. below the Australian champion four-year-old Hall Mark. Hall Mark last season won the Melbourne Cup, the A.J.C. and Victoria Derbies, and other races, and Nightly has been paid a tremendous compliment in being asked to concede him 21b. in this year’s Cup. It is claimed that the Australian ring would have had to pay out £50,000 in straightout wagers, as well as becoming involved in a heavy double liability, if Sir Simper had won the Caulfield Cup. The stable commission was placed mainly at 25 to 1, though a little money was invested early at 50 and 33 to I. Sir Simper’s starting price was the same as that of Eurythmic in 1920, this being the shortest price in connection with a Caulfield Cup. For wins in classes equivalent to 4.28 or faster, a penalty of lsec. is compulsory. In slower classes, the penalties are, within certain limits, optional, and the amazing suggestion has been advanced that Indianapolis might have been let off without a reassessment for his win at Oamaru. The optional provision was never meant to be interpreted in this way, as it would be unthinkable to impose no penalty for a win in a £SOO race. Last year the Moonee Valley Cup was won by Peter Jackson. This year New Zealanders did even better, Nightly, Miramond and Upoko Arigi filling the places. A broadcast discription indicated that Nightly was always going well, and when he ran past Miramond at the top of the straight he ran right away. It is noteworthy that all F. D. Jones’s successes on this trip have been experienced when the old association with M. McCarten has been renewed. SCRATCHINGS By Teleeraoh— Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, October 29.
