DOCTOR’S LUCKY ACT

READING IN BED Reading in bed saved a New Maiden doctor’s life last month. Dr. R. Davison, aged 83, of Parkview, a former local medical officer of health, was sitting in bed when he suddenly discovered that his book was obscured by smoke. He called for help, and his daughter, running into the bedroom, found she could not see for smoke. The fire brigade was called, and Dr. Davison, who is almost bedridden, was helped into another room. Blazing furniture was thrown into the garden. It is believed that the fire was caused by an electric stove, standing near a settee, being switched on instead of the radio set, and setting fire to the furniture. If Dr. Dawson, who is blind in one eye, had been asleep, he would probably have been suffocated.
