WAIHI SCHOOL

ANNUAL ATHLETIC SPORTS TWO RECORDS BROKEN On Saturday afternoon there was a very large attendance of parents and friends at the annual sports of Waihi School. Shortly after commencing a strong south-west wind sprang up and made things very unpleasant. Fortunately the rain held off till near the conclusion of the sports. The track was in good order. During the afternoon two records were broken. In the high jump, H. W. Fisher cleared 4ft 7in, beating the previous record of 4ft 51in. The same boy also lowered the throwing the cricket ball record of 68yds 2ft 9in by throwing the ball 73yds Ift 3in. Fisher was the outstanding performer during the day, winning six events, thereby winning the parents’ challenge cup, Mr J. L. Stone-Wigg and Mr C. C. Stewart were judge and timekeeper, and Mr J. E. Trimen was starter. Mrs A. J. StoneWigg entertained the guests at afternoon tea, which was served on the lawn. Owing to the rain coming on, the prizes were given out in the schoolroom. Mr Stone-Wigg extended a welcome to the visitors. Some of them had come a long way to be present that afternoon, and he fully appreciated their presence at the sports. He eulogised the performances of H. W. Fisher, who had scored 28 points, which was the possible. His performances that day were unique, as he had put up two new records —one, throwing the cricket ball (the previous record was put up by J. Edmonds 21 years ago), and lie also broke the high jump record. His other wins were the 100yds, 200yds, 880yds and the long jump. Mr StoneWigg asked Mr H. W. Fisher senr. to present the prizes. Mr Fisher thanked Mr Stone-Wigg for asking him to present the prizes that afternoon. He paid a tribute to the performances of the boys.
