OBITUARY

MR WALTER HAi'MAN The death occurred at an early hour yesterday morning, of Mr Walter Hayman, of “Opiro,” Studholme, in his seventy-fourth year. Mr Hayman was born in Somerset, England, in May, 1861, and at the age of two he accompanied his parents in the ship Ivanhoe to Melbourne, and shortly afterwards to Lyttelton. Mr Hayman was brought up in the Gust district, and farmed in the Ashburton district from 1883 to 1897. In this year he settled in the Waimate district, taking over the property ''Opiro” at Studholme, which he continued to farm successfully up till the time of his death, at the same time operating' an extensive threshing mill and chaffcutting business. Throughout his residence in the Waimate district, he maintained the keenest interest in public and local body affairs. For 25 years he continued in office as chairman of the Wainono Drainage Board, and was for more than 30 years a member of the Studholme School Committee for most of the period being in the chair. Formerly he was a member of the Hannaton School Committee. He gave invaluable service also as chairman of the Waimate branch of the South Canterbury War Relief Society, and as a member of the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society, both of which offices were recently relinquished on account of failing health. He was also an exhibitor at shows for many years, being successful in the classes for Shropshire sheep, Shorthorn cattle and light horses; in the lastnamed section notably with his old favourite Kruger as a 15 stone hack. He was also a member practically since its inception of the Waimate branch of the Farmers’ Union, and his sound knowledge of farming in all its. branches was always freely availed of by many settlers of the district. Mr Hayman was also a director of the Studholme Saleyards Company, on which his services were always for the provision of improved stock sale facilities. He was a staunch member of the Methodist Church, for which he was an enthusiastic worker for many years in Waimate, and later on the building committee of the Nukeroa Church at Studholme as church trustee and treasurer.

In April, 1907, Mr Hayman was elected as the representative of the Waimate Borough, Makikihi and Deep Creek Ridings and part of the Waihao Riding in the Waimate County, on the Timaru Harbour Board, a position he held right up to the time of his death. Mr Hayman took an exceedingly keen interest in the affairs of the Board, and had the honour of holding office as chairman from 1924 to 1928.
