MEDICAL SCHOOL

SELECTION OF STUDENTS The University Council, sitting in committee on Tuesday, in Dunedin, adopted certain regulations regarding the limitation of the number of students to be admitted to the second year of the medical course. The selection of these students is to be made as follows:—(1) Graduates of the University of New Zealand who are qualified to register as medical students; (2) candidates who, after having completed the intermediate examinations have kept terms and passed the university examinations in not fewer than two of the following subjects:— Physics 11, chemistry 11, botany 11, zoology 11, and experimental psychology (B.Sc.); (3) candidates who have completed the intermediate examinations. These candidates shall be chosen on the basis of the aggregate of marks obtained in the subjects of the intermediate examinations, provided that the maximum marks attainable in chemistry be not greater than those attainable in physics or biology. If a candidate has been credited with a pass in two subjects at a previous examination the marks in these subjects may be counted, or the candidate, if he or she so desires, may sit again for the whole examination. The council also decided that the total number 60 admitted shall be approximately 60; the first 50 (under regulation 3) to be taken on a strictly numerical basis on the marks obtained; and the remainder, in case the marks are very close, to be selected after taking into consideration the candidate’s record at school and at the University, with regard to both ability and character. To the total of 60 mentioned above, there will, of course, be added the students who fail to pass in the present 6econd year.
