GERALDINE

MEETING OF SWIMMING CLUB PROSPECTS BRIGHT The annual general meeting of the Geraldine Swimming Club was held on Tuesday, when the president (Mr J. D. McKechnie) presided over a good attendance. The annual report (previously published) and the balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £45/2/11, were adopted on the motion of Mr G. Loach and Mrs F. W. Graybum. In speaking to the report, the president thanked the parents for the interest they had taken in the club last year, and hoped that they would take the same active interest this year. He regretted that the credit balance had become smaller to the extent of about £5 during the season, but the decrease was due to the loss of financial members. The expenditure had been the same as previously, but the receipts had been smaller. With regard to the new water supply he quoted prices for concrete pipes for the piping of the water from opposite Sherratt’s stables to the baths. INSTITUTE GROUP A very pleasant evening was spent in the Parish Hall on Monday evening, when members of the executive of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes entertained members of the Geraldine Institute group— Woodbury, Orari, Hilton, Gapes Valley, and Geraldine—in honour of Miss Kane, vice-president of the executive of the Dominion Federation of Institutes, president of the Pioneer Club, and chairwoman of the New Zealand branch of the British Drama League.

The president of the South Canterbury Federation (Mrs L. E. Williams) welcomed Miss Kane and her mother to Geraldine. Mrs Williams apologised for several members of the executive who were not able to be present owing to the distance they had to travel, and thanked Mrs and Miss Hislop for arranging and decorating the hall, and Mrs Gerard for the flowers.

In reply, Miss Kane, who expressed pleasure at being present, thanked Mrs G. Macdonald (Orari) for her hospitality to her mother and herself during their stay. She spoke on the popularity of the Drama League, which was taking on everywhere, especially in the south. She had attended drama festivals in Gore and Timaru, and said that the success of the festivals was brought about through the Institute. She thought that the members of the Institute should co-operate in every way with town and country members and kindred bodies such as the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union.

The programme included songs by Miss Cruickshank; musical monologues by Mrs W H. Kirk; songs by Miss Amy Williamson; piano solos by Miss Killoh, Orari; songs by Mrs A. R. Guild, Milford. Miss Gimson was accompanist. A competition “Birds” was won by Miss Gwen Woolhouse (Geraldine), Miss Scott (Hilton) being second. A dainty supper was handed round,

after which community singing was held. Mrs Williams and Mrs A. McKenzie led in “John Brown’s Baby,” Mrs Macdonald (Orari) being accompaniste. Other songs were “My Bonnie” and “Drink to Me Only.” It was announced that the final of the choirs competition would take place at Temuka at the half-yearly Federation meeting, when 16 choirs would compete.

ST. PATRICK’S SPORTS ASSOCIATION A meeting of the St. Patrick's Sports Association, to consider the disposal of the assets of the Association, held on Tuesday, was attended by the president (Mr James Lysaght) and Messrs A. J. Bell, G. H. Patrick. B. Hayes, F. E. South, C. Stock, D. MacDonald. J. Kelliher, J. Mcllroy, and T. J. Paterson. Before proceeding with the business, the president referred to the death of Mr J. Kennedy, and a motion of condlence with Mrs Kennedy and family was carried in silence. The president intimated that the meeting had been called to consider what steps should be taken in regard to the Asociation, and, if it were decided to wind up its affairs, what should be done with the assets, comprising the three large flags, sports gear, and the material formerly used at the sports. Mr D. MacDonald: The idea at the last annual meeting was that we should hold on till it was opportune to resume the sports. The president: I am afraid that that time has not yet arrived. Mr MacDonald: I agree. Amateur athletics appear to have fallen from favour, and the meetings still conducted are held at a different time from our date. Mr Kelliher: What would be the cost of repairing the cycling track at the Domain? Mr MacDonald: It would be unthinkable ! In reply to a question by Mr Bell, the president intimated that the bank pass book showed that there had been a credit of £1 13s sd. but on February 18, 1928 £1 8s 5d had been withdrawn, and the remaining 5/- had been paid to the bank as a closing fee when the account was closed. Mr G. H. Patrick, who apologised ; for the absence of the Mayor (Mr B. | R. Macdonald), remarked that there j appeared to be no hope at present of | reviving the sports, which had practi- j cally died out. The matter of the j Association’s flags had been men- 1 tioned at the last meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council, when it had been suggested that the Association might be willing to hand the flags j over to the Council for safe keeping, j There were also a number of fittings. ! and he sugested that the Council ! should take charge of anything of any value. Mr C. Stock remarked that the i Geraldine Sports Association was talking of holding another carnival. Mr Bell was of the opinion that the property should be vested in the Council for the use of any sports body or local association requiring it. Mr MacDonald remarked that the Sports Association had no place in j which to store the articles, and he i thought the Council was the proper | body to take charge of them. Mr J. Mcllroy moved that the assets j be handed over, with the exception of ; the Paterson Challenge Cup, to the* Geraldine Borough Council for safe keeping, with authority to grant the loan of them to local clubs, and with a proviso, that, should the Association be revived, the property be returned. In reply to a question, Mr B. Hayes remarked that although he could not speak for the Council, he thought it very probable that it would accede to the request of the meeting. The motion, which was seconded by Mr A. J. Bell, was carried unanimously. On the motion of Messrs MacDonald and Patrick, it was decided to hand the Paterson Challenge Cup to the Geraldine Sports Association to be awarded as the executive thought fit. the trophy to be returned should the St. Patrick’s Association be revived.
