BOWLING

PARK CLUB ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the Park Bowling Club reads as under:— Your executive have much pleasure in presenting their annual report for the past season. The green was officially opened early in October for play, and the club commenced with about the same membership as the previous season. The club entered in the usual South Canterbury competitions and were able to fulfil all engagements, although not successful in winning. Enjoyable games were played with other clubs, and some very keen competition was witnessed. Owing to the Bristol Cup conditions being altered by the Centre and all matches taking place on one day, your club was unable to take part in this competition. This we very much regret, as it is the first occasion for many years that we have been unable to participate for this trophy. We feel that the new conditions arranged by the Centre are not in the best interests of clubs with a small membership, especially when all games are played early in the season and on a public holiday when most of our members have other engagements and cannot devote the whole day to playing bowls. This matter will no doubt be referred to at the annual meeting, with a view to a full discussion at the annual meeting of the Centre. Club Competitions. The usual club competitions were held during the season, the majority of members taking part in all games. The winners were:—Championship singles, C. Howe; runner-up, A. Cullen. Two-bowl doubles, C. Howe and A. Thoreau; runners-up, J. Gilmore and R. Worthington. Handicap singles, A. Earl. Rinks, C. Howe (s), A. Austin, J. Pearce, A. Earl. The club was represented in the Steans Cup by W. Cowles (s), C. Howe, J. Toneycliffe, A. Austin, and in the Murray Bowl match played against North Otago by J. Millar (s), R. Kirk, A. Earl, A. Austin. Austin also was selected for Canterbury to play against Otago for the Redpath Shield, played at Dunedin. The executive wish to congratulate these members on their selection and also their play in the respective games. Thanks. The executive wish to thank all members for their continued support in all functions held for the benefit of the club. The last few seasons have been trying ones. With the continued depression the club is working on a very small membership, and it is only the loyal support received from members that enables the club to carry on and meet its liabilities. The thanks of the club are due to the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) for a donation towards the club funds, to Mr N. Walker for a trophy for the junior championship, the ladies for their assistance in dispensing afternoon tea, the Park curator and his staff for their attention to the green, to the local newspapers for their reports of all games, and to the social committee of the club for their work during the off season in providing entertainment to augment the funds of the club.
