SPORTING

WAIMATE HUNT CLUB MEETING

CUP WON BY PETERETTE The steeplechase meeting of the Waimate District Hunt, held on the Racing Club’s course yesterday, opened in bright sunshine. Early in the afternoon there was a sudden change in the weather, heavy clouds banking up in the south-west and the temperature falling perceptibly, but only a few drops of rain had fallen when the last race was run. The ground was rather sticky, as a result of heavy frosts following recent rains, and the track was inclined to be soft, with one heavy patch near the top turn. The attendance was slightly better than a year ago, the gate receipts showing an increase of £l2/10/-, and the totalisator investments, £2676/10/-, were £lB2/10/in excess of last year’s win and nlaee totals.

Fields were well up to the average, and they provided some interesting sport, which was the more pleasing in view of the inability of the Club to offer big stakes. The Hunt Club Cup was marked by a good many mishaps, only four of the ten starters completing the course. Peterette, the winner, had not been seen at her best for some ‘ime owing to intermittent lameness, but she gave a fine display and scored a popular win. Black Duke gained his first success over obstacles by winning the Studholme Hurdles, in which Sunward came from the clouds to finish second after appearing to be out of the race at the halfway stage. The Riccarton trainer S. Barr, who took a big team of seven horses to the meeting, was rewarded by three wins, G. Humphries being the successful rider in each instance. First View, the winner of the Novice Plate, was making his first appearance in the South Island, and was the first horse to carry the colours of Messrs A. J. and W. T. Newsome. Cleaner, who was installed a hot favourite for the * Morven Handicap, justified the confidence of her supporters by showing improvement on her Ashburton form, but she had to be ridden out to beat the little fancied veteran Red Racer. The trotting event went to Sea Peter, who gave J. Wallis an overdue win after a battle all the way with Colleen Chenault. Owing to the continued illness of Mr J. H. Tompkins, the starting was entrusted to the well-known and capable official, Mr P. D. McNab. The honorary and other officers all worked enthusiastically to make the meeting successful, and from the sporting standpoint they achieved a full measure of success. On the financial side, it is hoped that the fixture will just about pay its way, but the Club’s funds are indemnified against loss by the generosity of guarantors. In presenting the cup to Mr G. E. Talbot, owner of the winner, Captain N. A. Rattray, president of the Club, brieflly tendered congratulations, and expressed pleasure that the honours were retained in South Canterbury by so consistent a supporter of the sport. He then called on Mrs Rattray to hand over the trophy. Mr Talbot in acknowledgement, said that he was gratified at being successful in the race at his first attempt, and he trusted that he would again have a competitor to bring to Waimate next year. First View’s First Win,

Violenta 172, First View 137 and Disguise 112 were the popular selections for the Novice Stakes. First View led out from Arrowform and Approval, and First View and Arrowform led up the back from I. Spy and Violenta. Arrowform, Violenta, I. Spy, Disguise was the order round the top, with First View next, and Arrowform and Violenta were first into the straight. Then First View shot out from the ruck, and taking charge a furlong from home won easily by two lengths from f- Spy, who defeated Violenta by a neck. Arrowform was only another neck away, with Disguise a fair fifth. First View was making his first appearance since he came from the north. His previous form had been poor, but he finished with a fast run after apparently being beaten.

Washdyke Pair Fight it Out. In the Winter Trot, Shandon Chimes (a half sister to Terence Dillon) was made a slightly better favourite than Colleen Chenault, there being a big drop in the figures to Sea Peter, who was third selection. Master Garry and Eiffelton Lass both began badly, and Self Reliance dropped out after going two or three furlongs. Sea Peter and Colleen Chenault went away with a nice lead froiA Self Reliance and Locust, and at the stand, Colleen Chenault, Sea Peter, Locust and Shandon Chimes were a long way ahead of the others. Colleen Chenault and Sea Peter led for the rest of the journey, Sea Peter outstaying the mare and beating her by a neck. Locust was eight or ten lengths away, well clear of Shandon Chimes, who fell away after being nicely placed in third position at the far turn.

Cup to Peterette.

A fine field of eleven paraded for the Hunt Club Cup, for which Night Club was installed a 24 units better favourite than Peterette. Night Club and Lammerlaw missed the jump out, from which Antrim Boy aAd Hostage were first to show. Slaunlathe took charge after clearing the first jump from Parasang and Royal Buck, but at the stand double, Royal Buck and Parasang were in front from Slaunlathe and Antrim Boy, when the lastnamed pair fell and Night Club ran off. Royal Buck led up the back from Snowy Dawn, Peterette and Hostage, but Snowy Dawn attempted to run over and blundered through the wing and fell into the ditch. Coming to the stand double the second time Peterette and Royal Buck were in advance of Hostage, Willow Glen, Lammerlaw, Parasang and Andy, but Royal Buck came to grief. Racing to the far turn the last time, Peterette, Hostage, Willow Glen, Lammerlaw and Parasang were in close order, but Lammerlaw commenced to drop back, and at the top the race was confined to Peterette, Willow Glen, Hostage and Parasang. Parasang fell when in third position at the last fence, and Peterette went on to win by five lengths from Hostage, who beat Willow Glen by half a dozen lengths. Lammerlaw was the only other to complete the course.

Hack Sprint Won by Cheap Money. Imperial Spear 185, Cheap Money 180, and Doiran 155 were the bestbacked candidates in the Waihao Hack Handicap. From a quick and even despatch, Cheap Money, Dracula and Eupator were first to show, running in line for a furlong. Dracula led round the far turn from Cheap Money, Eupator and Doiran, with Hot Tea tailing off. Dracula, Cheap Money and Doiran was the order into the straight, but in the run home Cheap Money took charge and won by a couple of lengths from the Waimate gelding. Imperial Spear was two lengths further back, a length in front of Doiran. with Eupator next. The turning course suited Cheap Money, who has a lot of speed but does not stay well. Imperial Spear appeared to be sore after the race, and may not be at his best for Saturday's meeting.

The Open Handicap.

A hot favourite was found in the Morven Handicap in Cleaner, who carried a good deal more than twice as much money as Silver Sight. Beau Geste and Niggerhead were quickest to move, but turning into the back Hurlingham Niggerhead were in charge from Beau Geste and Cleaner. Hurlingham led past the five furlongs post from Locksley, Cleaner, Niggerhead and Red Racer, but when the top was reached, Red Racer had run to the front from Cleaner and Hurlingham, and at the home turn the leaders were Red Racer, Silver Sight, Cleaner, and Hurlingham. Cleaner headed Red Racer a furlong from home and looked like winning comfortably, but Red Racer hung on unusually well, and at the post Cleaner’s margin had been reduced to half a length. Silver Sight was about a length and a half away, with Red Boa next, just ahead of Beau Geste and Niggerhead. This race looked to be the least convincing of the day, and one or two of the starters should do better on a bigger track.

Ex-Coaster Wins Plate. I There were six runners in the Hunter’s Plate, with Father O’Flynn 194, Granado 125 and Eaton Hall 117 in most demand. Pharaoh, Father O’Flynn and Granado were quickest to move, and passing the stand Father O’Flynn and Pharaoh had drawn out three lengths from Velvet and Granado. Velvet took charge turning into the back, from Father O’Flynn, Granado, Pharaoh, and Eaton Hall. Velvet led Granado and Eaton Hall round the top and into the straight the order was Granado, Eaton Hall, Velvet. Eaton IJall caught Granado half a furlong from home and beat him by a neck, with Pharaoh three lengths away. Velvet was fourth two lengths further back. Eaton Hall has done nearly all his racing on the Coast, and only recently went into D. O'Connor’s stable. Third Win for Barr Stable. Imperial Spear and Dracula, who had raced earlier in the day, were not produced again in the Waimate Hack Handicap, the concluding event, and for the first time during the day there was a one-dividend field. Backers concentrated on Colossian 346 and Doiran 238. Colossian, Weatherley and Eupator went away together, and Colossian and Weatherley raced past the half-mile post clear of Eupator and Doiran. The field bunched going to the far turn, but at the top Colossian and Weatherley established a lead of a couple of lengths from the other three, who were in line. A great race up the straight between the two leaders resulted in Colossian securing the verdict by a short head from Weatherley. Gold Boy and Eupator, with a neck between them, were about three lengths away.
