WRESTLING

WIN FOR MAMOS DISAPPOINTING BOUT Althotigh at times there was clever wrestling with several lively exchanges, the bout between Oki Shikina (Japan) 14,7 and Harry Mamos (Greece) 14.7, which took place in the Theatre Royal before a good house last night, was disappointing. The earlier rounds gave the house the best exhibition of wrestling of the night. Both men worked solidly in the first session ,and there was little between them. There was no sign of a fall until Mamos began to throw his opponent about the ring with side and forward chanceries. The Japanese, however, sprang quickly to attention, and when he charged the Greek with a flying tackle, Mamos rushed through the ropes to enter again just as the bell sounded. In the second round, Shikina was immediately brought to the canvas for a figure four scissors and hammerlock to be applied. Shikina broke the scissors, but Mamos effected a slip-over toe hold, the Japanese clearing with a face bar. Shikina rushed in with two flying tackles, and Mamos again sought shelter outside the ropes. The referee called upon Mamos to resume operations, but he preferred to argue with the referee rather than meet another charge by the Japanese. A reverse keylock looked like producing a fall until Shikina roughed up the Greek and broke clear. The round ended after Shikina had thrown Mamos with halches, and the Greek had found his way outside the ropes. Mamos commenced the third round with a wrist and arm scissors from which the Japanese broke to apply a partial Japanese crucifix. Both men exchanged holds, Mamos having his opponent in a good armchair splits as the bell sounded. Both wrestlers mixed it freely with jabs and punches in the next session, the Japanese giving ‘Mamos a hot time when he rushed into a corner. Shikina continued to force the pace, and following five or six hard halches, he pinned Mamos with a Japanese arm bar and body press for the first fall. The fifth round saw the Japanese in difficulties, and he took severe punishment in a hammerlock in preference to submitting. He broke the hold brilliantly, and Mamos again ran outside the ropes for shelter. The sixth round saw Shikina thrown around the ring with halches. The Japanese appeared to be foxing, however, and he rose to his feet and made a dive for Mamos. The Greek side stepped, and Shikina ended outside the ring near the footlights. He lay on the boards, and failure to enter the ring within the given time cost him a penalty fall. Mamos rushed in to finish the Japanese, who appeared to have felt the effect of his dash through the ropes, but Shikina stood his ground, and punches were freely exchanged. The end came when Mamos secured a partial Greek Cross on the Japanese, and Shikina was obliged to submit. The Japanese was the favourite with the crowd, and at the finish Mamos was subjected to considerable booing. Mr M. McKenna controlled the contest. The Preliminaries. R. Davis (Temuka) 10.8 beat R. Brookland (Timaru) 10.3, by two falls to one. J. Lithgow (Timaru) 12.2 drew with M. Moloney (Timaru) 11.10, one fall each. A. Hobbs (Timaru) 11.12 beat M. Cameron (Temuka) 11.9 by two falls to nil.
