END OF FOURTH TEST

NOTABLE GAME RESULTS IN DRAW United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 24. The fourth Test match was drawn, rain stopping play at 12.50 p.ni. Leyland and Hopwood were then batting and England, with four wickets in hand, still needed 135 runs to avert an innings defeat. Wicket Waterlogged. When play ceased at lunch, following a heavy downpour, England had lost six wickets for 229 runs. Light rain was still falling at 2 o’clock. The water penetrated the covers and the wicket became waterlogged. The captains inspected the wicket at 2.45 o’clock, when the rain ceased. It was intended to reinspect the wicket at 3.30 o’clock, but further rain intervened. W. M. Woodfull and R. E. S. Wyatt made a lengthy inspection of the pitch at 4 o’clock. A squeegee roller was applied around the pitch and there then seemed to be prospect of play within an hour. Play Abandoned. The captains inspected the wicket at 4.30 o’clock and when it was further inspected at 5 o’clock they disagreed and the umpires made an inspection. The umpires decided to have another look at it at 6 o'clock, when they abandoned the match. During the weary wait the discussions chiefly concerned the incident in which Hopwood received the umpire’s verdict on appeal for a catch by Wall at silly mid-on. The Australians were convinced that Hopwood was out, Oldfield and other’s near the wicket joining in the applause for what appeared to be a brilliant catch. The umpire must have decided that Wall took the ball from the ground. Following are the scores: ENGLAND.
