COMPENSATION ACT

MEASURE TO BE IMPROVED. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. July 25. In the House to-day Mr W. E. Parry (Lab., Auckland Central) moved for leave to introduce the Workers’ Compensation Amendment Bill, which followed the lines of the Bills previously introduced by the late Leader of the Opposition. The Bill provided that compensation for relief workers should be computed not at relief rates of pay but as computed for workers in full time industry. Mr F. W. Schramm (Lab., Auckland East) said that the present Workers’ Compensation Act was full of anomalies. He appealed to the Government to get rid of those anomalies and bring the legislation up to date. Mr E. J. Howard (Lab.. Christchurch South) said he was told years ago that the insurance companies had prevented more from being done for injured workers, and he believed that that was correct.

The Hon. J. Bitchener, speaking on behalf of the Minister of Employment, said a Bill would be brought down this session to improve the Workers’ Compensation Act. He had no idea what lines the amendments would take. The Bill was introduced and read a first time.
