ARBOR DAY ARRANGEMENTS MADE Arrangements for the fitting celebration of Arbor Day in Temuka on August 2 were made at a meeting of the reserves committee of the Borough Council. The chairman (Cr. W. H. McMillan) reported that he had interviewed the headmaster of the Temuka District High School regarding the school’s participation in the celebrations, and he submitted the following tentative programme to be conducted at the East End Playground: Pupils of the upper classes of the primary department and the secondary division to assemble at the north-east corner of the ground, where speeches will be made by the Mayor, the chairman of the school committee and a representative of the Gardening Circle of the Temuka Women’s Institute. After that, selected pupils will plant shrubs in the north-east comer and a lime tree for shelter at the east end. The Municipal Band is to be in attendance and give selections during the planting. At the north-west comer the Gardening Circle members will plant shrubs and a lime tree. At the conclusion of the planting the gathering will reassemble at the north-east corner, where a pupil of the school will give an appropriate recitation and the Mayor his concluding remarks. Two features will be screened at Temuka to-night. “Men of Steel” has the British steel industry as a background. It stars John Stuart as the hero, with Heather Angel as the heroine. “Shanghai Madness” represents one of the outstanding contributions of the screen. It is a pulsing romance, laid amid the intrigue, the adventure, the thrills and the excitement of Shanghai. The cast is studded with some of the finest performers in films. Spencer Tracy has the leading role of an impulsive naval officer. Fay Wray has the principal feminine role, and promises to outdo her performances in “King Kong” and “Ann Carver’s Profession.” The supporting cast, headed by Ralph Morgan and Eugene Pallette, also includes Herbert Mundin, Reginald Mason, Arthur Hoyt and Albert Conti.
