BEEF RECEDES IX VALUE By Telegraph —Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, July 25. There were large entries of both fat cattle and fat sheep forward at to-day’s weekly market. Fat cattle eased in value, but fat sheep maintained last week’s rates. Store sheep—There was a small entry, which included a flock of ewes. Two-tooths sold to 38/- and soundmouthed to 27 3. Good two-tooth halfbred ewes made to 38/-, medium four and six-tooth to 32 6. ordinary soundmouth to 27/3, full and failing-mouth 21 9 to 241, and ordinary six and eight-tooth wethers to 17 2. Fat sheep)—There was a heavy entry of 4500 head, which included good southern lines. Wethers were slightly easier, and ewes firmer. Extra prime heavy wethers sold to 29/10, prime heavy 25 6 to 28/-, prime medium weight 23 6 to 25/-, light and ordinary 17/6 to 22/-; extra prime heavy ewes to 25/10, prime 22 6 to 24/-, prime medium weight 19 6 to 22/-, and light and ordinary 11/- to 18/-. Fat cattle—4ss were penned, including some good southern drafts. The quality was better than for some months, but the market was down by 15/- to 20 - for all classes. Best beef made from 22/- to 24 6 per 1001 b. heavy 17/6 to 21/-, secondary 14 '6 to 17/-, and inferior down to 13/-. Extra prime heavy steers sold to £l3/7/6, prime heavy £BS - to £lO/5/-. prime medium weight £7 to £8 5/-. ordinary £4/5/- to £6/10/-, light to £4; extra prime heifers to £9 7 6, prime £5 to £7, ordinary £3/15/- to £4/15/-, light to £3/10/-; extra prime cows to £9/12/6. prime £5 to £6 15/-, ordinary £3/5/- to £4'ls / -, aged to £3. Fat pigs—There was a medium entry. There was a good demand for porkers, but baconers were slightly easier. Values were—Choppers 35/- to £6/1/-, baconers 27 6 to 54/6, heavy baconers 57/6 to £3/9'6. extra heavy to £3/14/6 (average price per lb 43d to 54a); porkers 28 6 to 34 6, heavy 37/6 to 44 6 (average price per lb 43d to s*d). BURNSIDE SALE MUTTON A SHADE DEARER. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, July 25. There were larger entries than usual in the major section at Burnside today. The yarding of 290 fat cattle included several consignments of good quality bullocks and more cow’s and heifers than usual. The sale opened with a drop in prices of 20/- a head for all classes, but the market improved as the sale progressed, and over the final stages the drop was practically recovered. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold to £l3 17s 6d. prime to £ll 17s 6d, medium to £8 17s 6d. light to £5 10s, extra prime heifers to £B, and prime cows to £6 15s. There w ? as a yarding of 1863 fat sheep, but the quality was not up to the usual standard. Medium quality ewes comprised the bulk of the entry, and heavy wethers were distinctly in the minority. Prime wethers and heavy ewes showed an appreciation of about 1/- a head, but light ewes, owing to the supply being in excess of the requirements, sold at reduced rates. Hoggets were penned in larger numbers than usual, but there was very little demand. Extra prime wethers sold to 31/-, prime heavy to 28 6. medium to 25 '6. light to 20 6. extra prime heavy ewes to 23 6. prime heavy to 20/6 and medium to 17/6. The fat pig entry totalled 128. and there was keen competition throughout. Best baconers brought to £4. and heavy porkers to £2 9s. There was a very small entry of 39 store pigs, and these met improved competition. In the store cattle pens 28 head were yarded, comprising beefers and boning cows, and there was a keen sa. 1 ? for the former, but cull cows were only wanted at low rates. A small entr> of medium sorts in the dairy cattle sections met with little competition, and the values obtained were disappointing to vendors. MINING RETURNS. By Telegraph—Press Association WESTPORT. Wright has received the following cabled report of the Colombo tea auction of July 24 • A catalogue of 21 million lbs was sold Fine teas were in keen demand and advanced ebout a halfpenny. Medium grades were steady while common teas were in, lar and slightly easier. The quality of tl. ? offerings showed further improvement. At next week’s sale two million lbs will be catalogued.
