TRANSPORT OF GOODS

MOTOR SERVICES LICENSED AUTHORITY SITTING IN TIMARU The session of District No. 8 Transport Licen ing Authority, which is being held in Timaru, was continued yesterday before Messrs J. D. Hutchison (chairman), G. S. Cray (Timaru) and M. Bethell (North Canterbury). Mrs M. Kelberg (Pleasant Point) applied for continuous licenses for two vehicles. Mr H. L. Warsaw, for the applicant, stated that a new truck had been bought, which the applicant intended to use for continuous work. The license was granted. On behalf of Noah Sherratt (Geraldine), Mr .I. A. Knight applied for a continuous licence to cart wool from Geraldine to Christchurch. It was stated the applicant had been carting in Geraldine for 30 years and desired a continuous licence to enable him to take wool for his clients to the Christchurch wool sales. The February sale in Timaru had been cut out for next season, and Geraldine clients had approached Mr Sherratt with a view of having their wool carted to the Christchurch sales. . Competition With Railway. The application was strenuously opposed by Mr E. S. Brittenden, representing the Railway Department, who said there were already too many carriers operating on the GeraldineChristchurch road, parallel, and in direct competition, to the railway. He suggested that the applicant could cooperate with the Department by carting wool from Geraldine county to the rail. Decision was reserved. D. G. Rutherford .(Geraldine) was granted a licence to operate a mail service between Peel Forest and Rangitata. For E. Dobson (Temuka), Mr L. M. Inglis made application for the renewal of an existing licence. Under his present licence, Dobson was permitted two trips a week to Smithfleld with dairy produce from the Clandeboye Dairy Factory, but he desired an extension of the number of trips and also authority to run to Timaru. Several oi his clients required kerosene and other material from Timaru and if he were permitted to come into Timaru on the days on which he came to Smithfleld, it would be of great convenience to the dairy farmers. Mr Brittenden stated that the Department had no objection to Dobson carting cheese to Smithfleld, but he did object to him being allowed to come into Timaru. Decision was reserved. Decision also was reserved in a case in which A. Smith (Raukapuka) applied for an area license for Geraldine county, north of the railway, and within a radius of seven miles of the Rangitata Bridge in Ashburton county, a route license to Mt. Somers for coal only, and a seasonal route license to carry wool from Geraldine to Timaru Reserved Decision Given.
