They were first sighted about 5 o’clock in the area between the Saddleback, Moturoa, and Lion Rock Islands, and even from a distance of a mile they made an impressive sight as they proceeded slowly along the coast. The fish were spread out over a fairly large area and were travelling in pairs. A party of five Moturoa residents put off nn a launch for nearer inspection. At close quarters the blackfish appeared to average about 20 feet in length and about 12 feet in girth. An attempt was made to catch one for examination. but although the Jhase was spectacular, there was no success. The speed of the launch w’as no match for the agility of the blackfish, wrhich merely swam quickly ahead when the launch came too close, and then resumed their steady progress southwards. The party spent nearly an hour in attempting to trap one of the school. Mr W. W. Smith, the wellknown naturalist, said it was part of the annual migration of the species to deep waters, below the South Island. The whole of the whale species, of which the blackfish was a member, made this migration for breeding purposes at some time during the year. He said the blackfish would remain in the south for about two months. The final of the Main School waltzing competition resulted in favour of Miss Thomson and Mr Petrie. Mr C. E.
