PETITE PRIMA DONNA Lily Pons, the famous singer, .who made her first appearance in England at the Albert Hall on May 13, weighs only 7st. 31b., and is only sft. 2in. high, but she can sing higher than anybody else in the world. Her voice ranges from middle C in the lower register to A above high C. Her feet are so small that she has to have her shoes specially made. Born in Cannes of a French father and Italian mother, she started as a pianist, graduating at the Paris Conservative at the age of thirteen 1 ? At eighteen she went on the stage, playing with Max Dearly. At twentyone she had her first singing lesson. Now she is prima donna at the Metropolitan, with a five-year contract, at the age of twenty-six. Dark, small-featured, and olivetinted, she resembles Lillian Gish.
