CHARGES AGAINST PLAYERS INCIDENTS IN RECENT MATCHES

The behaviour on the field of three players was inquired into by the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union at last night’s meeting. There were present—Messrs A. G. Knowles (chairman), A. B. Rowlands, H. E. Lawson, S. Williams, L. Connolly, A. B. Herdr an, W. A. Cumming, A. Aitken, J. Lillico and S. H. Sullivan. Player Stood Down. The referee of the Star-Temuka senior match at Fraser Park on Saturday (Mr R. G. Sampson) reported ordering off J. Bracken, a Star forward, for . striking a Temuka player. The referee and Bracken attended the meeting. In answer to the charge, Bracken said that he had been dribbling the ball down in a loose rush, and Solomon, the Temuka player, caught him round the neck and attempted to throw him over. He lost his head and attempted to strike Solomon. The chairman: Did you connect? Bracken: I do not think so. The referee said that the game was played in a good spirit. He saw Bracken strike the opposing player, but Solomon stated after the incident that the blow had not hurt him very much. Mr Lillico moved that Bracken be ordered to stand down for one playing Saturday. The motion was seconded by Mr Lawson and carried unanimously. Referee’s Decisions Questioned. A complaint from Mr W. L. Richards, who refereed the junior A game between Star knd Pareora, at Pareora, on June 16, that J. Whitty, a Star player, had questioned his decisions, was held over last week to enable the player to attend. Whitty admitted questioning the referee’s decisions, and the player, who stood down last Saturday, was cautioned. Member of Committee Upheld. Referring to the Temuka-Star third grade match which was played at School Park on June 16, Mr Connolly said that he had had occasion to speak to B. Ede, a Star player, concerning rough tactics. Mr Connolly alleged that Ede had deliberately attempted to upend a Temuka player by catching hold of his foot after he had just missed a kick at the ball, and at a later stage of the match Ede had deliberately attempted to kick at a Temuka player when both men were lying on the ground. He had spoken to Ede from the sideline during the match, and Ede had used an offensive expression. Ede told the meeting that he did not kick the player. If he had it was only natural that the Temuka man would have made some complaint, but he did not say anything to the speaker about it. The chairman: Did you attempt to kick him? Ede: No. In reply to Mr Williams Ede said he used the language complained of after the game, when Mr Connolly was talking to the Star coach. Mr Herdman considered that no player had a right to use bad language to a member of the Management Committee. He moved that Ede be stood down for two playing Saturdays. The motion was seconded by Mr Connolly and carried, Messrs Cumming and Lillico voting against. General. The Mackenzie Sub-Union wrote confirming July 19 as the date for the annual match against South Canterbury. The Pleasant Point Club made application for a date for its annual seven a-side tournament, and offered the Union 50 per cent, of the proceeds providing a date was selected on which there were no counter-attractions. The matter was referred to the Flag Committee. Mr A. B. Rowlands submitted his report on the Waimate-South Canterbury match, and on his motion it was decided that the Waimate Sub-Union be thanked for its hospitality.
