ARUNDEL
FANCY DRESS BALL. The Howard Hall, Arundel, was crowded on the occasion of a fancy dress ball held in aid of the school funds. The first part of the evening was devoted to the children, who under their teacher, Miss Bowen, danced very nicely a number of folk and other dances. A solo was sung by Eric Ambler, the other children joining in the chorus. The music was supplied by Mesdames J, Ambler and J. Charles. Mesdames G. Dennistoun and S. Upritchard judged the children’s dresses. Many adults in fancy costumes were present, and the hail presented a very gay appearance. Commander G. Dennistoun assisted Mesdames Dennistoun and Upritchard to judge the adult section. Mrs J. M. H. Tripp, who w r as to have acted as one of the judges was unable to be present. Commander Dennistoun congratulated the School Committee on the success of the entertainment and said that the judges had experienced great difficjgty in making the awards as there were so many excellent costumes. He then called on Mrs Dennistoun to present the prizes. The awards were as follows: — Children’s Section.—Best Boy and Girl, Claude and Joyce Brown. Mrs Tripp’s prizes for prettiest girl’s and boy costume, Helen Pithie and Douglas Foster. Mrs J. Charles’ prizes for best girl and boy under school age, Shona Brown and Jimmy Black. Mrs Ashby’s prizes for cheapest dresses, Betty Smith and Hugh McNab. Mrs McEJonald’s prize for most original boy, Laurie Johnston. Mrs Foster, senior’s prize for most original girl, June Foster. Miss Bowen’s prizes for most humorous boy and girl, Bruce McNab and Joan Charles. School Committee’s prize best family group, the Ambler family. Mr and Mrs Johnston’s prizes, best fancy dress for girl and boy attending Arundel School. Dolly Johnston and Eric Ambler. Adult Section.—Best pair in fancy dress, “American Sailors,” Misses M. Charles and M. McShane. Best individual costume, “Buy British Goods,” Miss Hazel Galletley; “Dad Rudd,” Mr W. Ashby. Most original, “New Zealand Wool.” Miss Tui Turton; “Golden Wedding Bridegroom,” Miss Elsie Edwards. Most humorous, “Mum Rudd,” Mrs W. Ashby; “Ethel," Mr F. Brown. Cheapest costume, “Scarecrows,” Misses J. Ford and Millicent Pratt. Mr W. Foster proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to the judges. During the evening Miss Allan contributed a song, the accompaniment being played by Miss McQuiggan. A competition for a hamper containing a dinner was won by Mr A. Lapthorne, Geraldine, and one for a cake was won by Mrs Albert Brown. Music for dancing was supplied by an orchestra, an extra being played by Miss McQuiggan. Mr W. Foster was M.C. The gross takings amounted to more than £2B.
