A. AND P. SOCIETY YEAR’S WORKING REVEALS A PROFIT A meeting of the Mackenzie County A. and P. Society was held in the Parish Hall on Friday, Mr W. R. McConnell, presiding. Before commencing business, the president referred to the loss of the Society renently sustained through the death of an old member and exhibitor, Mr Geo. Keefe. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the deceased, all present standing in silence. Mr A. G. Monahan, Murchison, wrote complimenting the Committee on the fine Show and expressing thanks for the hospitality extended. The Timaru A. and P. Association wrote enclosing a copy of a letter sent to the Wheat Purchase Board, re having the weight of the standard bushel f.a.q. milling wheat reduced. The letter was received enclosing a a cheque for 10/6 as a special prize in the children's section at next year's show, and expressing regret at not being able to be present at the annual social. The Hon. J. Bitchener wrote In reference to the Society’s application for a share of the profits of an Art Union. Mr H. P. Ashton wrote making a number of suggestions in regard to the grain section at the show. The matter was held over to be dealt with by the incoming Committee. The Mayfield Women's Institute wrote offering the prizes for an afternoon tea tray competition to be open to all members of Women's Institutes and Women's Divisions in South Canterbury. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Mayfield Women’s Institute for their generous offer. The matter was recommended to the incoming Committee for favourable consideration. Annual Report. The following report was read and adopted to be presented to the annual meeting. “The Committee have much pleasure in presenting to members, the 36th annual report and balance sheet. The annual show held on Easter Monday, again proved very successful. The splendid entry of 2348 was a record for the Society, whilst the attendance at the show was equal to the record of several years ago. The annual social and presentation of cups, was held in May and the Hall was packed to its utmost. The Committee in charge of the arrangements spared no efforts to make the function an outstanding success and thanks are due to Mr R. A. Grant and his willing helpers for arranging all details in such a thorough manner. During the year, the Committee was unfortunate in losing the services of two old and valued members, Messrs Geo. Morris and W. T. Smith. The services of these gentlement will be greatly missed. The Committee wish to thank all who again so ably supported the show with entries, it being realised that it is by the support of exhibitors that the show maintains a high standard. In conclusion, the Committee wish to thank all judges, stewards and others who so willingly gave help.” Mr McConnell stated that when Mr Geo. Morris was leaving the district, he and several of the Committee had arranged for a presentation to be made, as a mark of appreciation of Mr Morris' long and valued services to the Society. The president’s action in this matter was unanimously endorsed. Mr T. F. Bussell, treasurer, read the balance sheet. This showed that a very successful year had resulted. The nett profit being £7l. The total cash balance was now £325. Mr Bussell said he thought the balance sheet was very satisfactory and all were to be congratulated on the outcome of the year. President H. A. Munro said he wished to congratulate the president and treasurer on the very fine balance sheet; he thought it was a very good indication of the popularity of the show. Mr McConnell expressed his thanks to all who had helped him so well through his year of office. Mr D. Fraser moved and Mr H. A. Munro seconded that the balance sheet be approved to be presented to the annual meeting.

SHERWOOD INSTITUTE. In the absence of the president (Mrs Mackenzie) Mrs M. Reid (vice president) presided over the June meeting of the Sherwood Women’s Institute. A welcome was extended to Mrs Bremner of Mosgiel. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs Bray in her illness. Mrs A. Napier was thanked for her motto, which was artistically prepared. Mrs B. Robertson offered to prepare the motto for July. It was decided to send a parcel of clothing to the Red Cross centre in Christchurch. Mrs S. Harper was appointed delegate to the conference in Wellington. An entertainment is to be held in July, the programme to consist of two one-act plays and musical items. At the ordinary meeting in July the birthday cake will be cut and musical and elocutionary items will be given. The president thanked and congratulated members on the financial and social success of the annual dance. Miss Christine Macdonald gave a demonstration of embroidery stitches and was accorded a vote of thanks. Competitions resulted: —Thrift article, Mrs B. Anniss 1, Miss Whatman 2, Mrs S. Harper 3. Specimen bloom, Miss Whatman 1, Mrs B. Anniss 2. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The annual fancy dress ball, in aid of the Plunket Society’s funds, was held in the Aorangi Hall. The hall was nicely decorated, and there was a good attendance. The fancy costumes, although not as numerous as in past years, were of a high standard, and some very pretty and original costumes were worn. Prizes were awarded as follows: Most original costume, “Bernard Shaw and Free Milk,” Mrs Latimer and Mr L. Ross. Most humorous, “Joe and Jane,” Mr A. Agnew and Mr T. Darling. Most economical, “Petrol and Plume,” Miss M. Esplln and Miss S. Burgess. Best pair, "Spanish Bride and Groom,” Mr and Mrs D. D. Grant Prettiest dresses, “Old English Pair,” Mrs H. Wall and Mrs R, Fergus Son. The prizes were presented by Mrs E. Goodwin, president of the Society, who expressed thanks to all who had helped to make the dance a success.
