ORDINARY MEETING

COMMITTEE REPORTS The fortnightly meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last night. Present.—The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), Councillors G. Bsnstead, W. G. Tweedy, W. 11. Hal}, a j. Mathers, P. B. Foote, A. G. Fg.tu', F. B. Hawkey and P. C. Vuincl..

Omnibus and Electricity Committee. The Omnibus and Electricity Committee reported as follows: Flour mill rates—Report by Mr Hitchcock, Christchurch: As Mr Hitchcock was unable to visit Timaru on Monday, June 18, owing to special meetings of his own Council, he sent down reports stating that he could then, if necessary, come down to discuss the matter. Resolved to postpone consideration of the report pending a visit by Mr Hitchcock, and that a special meeting of the Council be called on the day of his visit. The report was adopted. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported as follows: Payment of loan interest in London.—Power to act was given to Crs. Foote and Mathers in regard to the matter of transmission of interest on the waterworks loan. Conversion Loan No. 2 —Letter was received from the secretary of the Leans Board forwarding Order-in - Council approving the above loan converting the workers’ dwelling loan. The town clerk was instructed to prepare the necessary formal resolution. Slaughtering contract.—The town clerk reported as follows:—“Acting under instructions to prepare a scale of fees to result in a reduction of £4OO per annum in the charges to butchers, I have to submit the following:—Cattle 5/9, calves 1/1. sheep and lambs 9d.” The committee reported that the town clerk’s report was adopted with the exception of the suggested price for calves, which it was recommended should be 1/6 instead of 1/1, the amended prices to the butchers to be only during the currency of the present slaughtering contract. The report was adopted.

Works Committee. The Works Committee reported as follows: Health week.—Letter was considered from the Royal Sanitary Institute suggesting the week October 7 to 13 be observed as health week. Resolved to recommend that the Council agree to the holding of a health week, and that a meeting be called of all health organisations to discuss the matter, and that advice as to programme be sought from the Medical Officer of Health. Strathallan Street conveniences.— Further consideration was given to the question of closing the entrance from the footpath by the Crown Hotel, and the committee unanimously recommended that steps be taken to close this entrance Gas meters damaged.—Letter from the Timaru Gas Company regarding damage to prepayment gas meter on Bay amounting to £2/7/6, this being the second time these meters had been broken open during a period of six months, and asking if the Council would pay for the damage. Resolved to recommend that the Council could not pay for the damage. The report was adopted.
