July 21—Hawke’s Bay Hunt. July 26—Waimate Hunt. July 26, 28—Poverty Bay T.C. July 28—South Canterbury Hunt. July 28— Manawatu R.C. Trotting: June 27—Auckland T.C, July 7—Marlborough T.C. (at New Brighton). July 26, 28—Greymoutl) T.C. Acceptances for the Oamaru meetin are due to-night. Entries for the South Canterbury Hunt meeting are due on July 13. The Waimate point-to-point meeting Will be held on Thursday at Hook. Betting at Oamaru on Saturday will be conducted on the win and place principle. J. W. King has leased a two-year-old filly by Rosenor fiom Week End, dam of Economist and Pillow Fight. The obstacles in the “steeplechase” at Oamaru will be similar to those provided last year, hurdles brushed with manuka. Tea Garden seems to have lost form, and in his recent races over hurdles he has been well beaten at the end of. a mile. F. J. Smith won with Ganton, WorthyLight and Chancellor at Epsom on Saturday, raising his total of winning drives for the season to 51. Nell Volo did not tackle Biddy Parrish (who finished third) at Auckland on Saturday, but it is probable that she will start to-morrow. Llewellyn’s Pet Is racing very consistently without a great deal of luck, her last three starts having produced a second and two thirds. Adult has yet to finsh outside the money in a hurdle race, but he rather disappointed his admirers at Ashburton. A bad jump opposite the stand no doubt took something out of him. Insolvent again cut up badly at the start at Ashburton, arid it seems that he Is as fickle as many others of Denver Huon’s progeny have been. His pedigree seems to be his main excuse. Bide-a-wee was giving away a couple of seconds to start in the Winchmore Handicap at Ashburton, and as a result of finishing second she Will be reassessed at 3,41. De Soto, who won the Lyndhurst Trot at Ashburton and was deposed as the result of a conference of the judicial committee, is trained by the veteran T. Logan. French Fleet completed the course safely at Ashburton, jumping with something like his old proficiency. A win for the South Hillend 'chaser after his run of 111-luck would be popular. It must be nearly a record for two successive winners to be deposed, as happened at Ashburton on Saturday. The two Inquests were unfortunate for the club, as at one stage the pools on two races were impounded. Up till the time his saddle slipped forward, Imperial Spear promised to take a hand in the finish of the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton, and he should not experience any difficulty in seeing out a mile and a quarter. The Southland-bred pacer Young Frank, who has not fulfilled expectations in Canterbury, has left J. J. Kennerley’s establishment, and is now trained in the country by L. A. Maidens at Winchmore. J. E. Ellis failed to ride a winner at Ashburton, but K. Votre was similarly unsuccessful on each day at Napier Park. With a lead of six points, the South Island now looks certain to remain in front till July 31. Membo jumped well in the Dromore Steeplechase, and when his rider took him up to Punchestoun half a mile from home it was all over bar accidents. Membo’s condition can be improved and he looks a good prospect for further successes. Punchestown’s backers claimed that he was a certainty beaten when he followed Barrington off at Washdyke, but his rather weak finish at Ashburton did not support that view. The Thurnham gelding jumped fairly well while racing with Gallivanter, but was very sticky at his fences after he was left in front by himself. He wiii i to improve if he is to fulfil the prophecies that he will win a big ’chase this winter. Membo has been nominated for the Wellington Steeplechase; Rasouli, Membo and Adult for the Winter Hurdles; and Water Power and Gustavo for the Whyte Handicap, the principal events at the Wellington winter meeting. Trivet is slipping in the weights. After finishing fifth in a field of fourteen hi the Riverton Cup, she was third in the Champion Hack Handicap (7.0 minimum) with 8,11. In the Winter Handicap at Oamaru she is on 8.2 (7.7 minimum). Cyclonic, who won a double at Napier Park, is a three-year-old by Hunting Song from Cymene, dam of Cylinder. Races are not hard to win in the Bay nowadays, but Cyclonic is a fine type of horse who may go on to better things this season. The two-year-old Ironside was well placed all the way in the Lyndhurst Trot at Ashburton, but he did not finish as well as was anticipated, and was outstayed by another juvenile in Agility. Graham Direct, the other two-year-old in the race, broke up badly at the start. Water Power shifted a bit at the top of the straight at Ashburton, and it was claimed that she did not finish as well as usual. That is not a reasonable assumption. She failed to catch Great Star, but the pair drew right away from the rest of the field. Probably Witter Power was Short of a gallop. Two of the new batch of M.L.C.s, Messrs W. Hayward and W. Perry, are members of New Zealand trotting executives. Mr Hayward is on the Trotting Association and Mr Perry on the executive of the Conference. Mr E. R. Davis, is part owner of King March, while Mr H. A. Russell and Ms J. McLeod are both members of committees of Metropolitan Club committees.
