MELBOURNE CENTENARY

NO SHIPS AVAILABLE FOR DIRECT SERVICE By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, June 23. With the object of endeavouring to arrange for a direct passenger service between the South Island and Melbourne during the Centenary celebrations, the Mayor, the Rev. E. T. Cox, has communicated with four Australian shipping companies, the Melbourne Steamship Company, Messrs Mcll wraith and McEachem. Melbourne, the Adelaide Steamship Company and the Australian Steamship Proprietors, all of which have replied that they had no suitable vessel available for such a service.
