GERALDINE

RADIO RECEPTION ; MUCH INTERFERENCE ; Electrical interference, the bane c 1 the wireless enthusiast, has been mos ; marked in Geraldine in recent week till it has become unbearable from ; 'listener’s point of view, with a resul that the mere mention of “interfer 1 ence” induces wrath. A resident of Raukapuka, whei approached by the “Herald” represent ative yesterday, expressed himself ii no unmeasured terms, and stated tha he was one of seven set owners in th locality who all complained bitterly o interference. As the sets were of vari ous types it was obvious that t.hi interference was not confined to an’ one particular make. A visit had beei made by the Post and Telegraph De partment’s radio inspectors and thi cause of the interference was traced t< an electrical machine. The visit wa: paid about five weeks ago, and in orde: to remedy the matter the radio owner: agreed to pay the cost of an attachment which would eliminate interference, but the matter has not yei been remedied. After a short interva reception became normal, and th« radio owners congratulated themselves that the “noise” had been eliminated but it subsequently transpired that the machine had been out of action for s fortnight or so, and interference is now as bad as ever. However, Raukapuka radio owners are not alone in their complaints, as residents in Geraldine township have also suffered from interference during the last fortnight. At Raukapuka the “noise” was a high-pitched intermittent sound, but in the township the interference, which, on occasions, continues all the evening, is a deep sustained buzz, which makes reception impossible. It is evident that the “noise” does not emanate from an electric motor used commercially, as on Sunday last it was very bad throughout the evening. Various theories are advanced for the trouble, but power leakage appears to be the most likely source. Residents on the Geraldine Downs are not immune, several, who are a considerable distance from the town, having complained of trouble lately. A visit from the Post and Telegraph Department’s radio inspectors, with their testing apparatus, w’ould be greatly appreciated by Geraldine radio owners, of whom there are a large number considering the size of the town. ELECTRICAL INCUBATOR. In order to cope with the increasing demand for day-old chicks and pullets, Mr F. Hughes, of Speechley’s Bridge, has installed an all-electric incubator of 3,600 egg capacity. There are several interesting features in the construction and operation of this machine. The cabinet is of solid redwood, highly polished, and the nickel plated hinges and locks enhance the appearance, so that it could easily be mistaken for a large show case. Behind glass doors can be seen row upon row of egg trays, and while the space required for this quantity of eggs in the old type incubator would be veryconsiderable the machine occupies a floor space of only 3ft. 6in by Bft. Automatic temperature controls ensure accurate temperature at all times, and the air in the cabinet is kept constantly stirred by means of specially designed fans, and thus the temperature is equalised in all parts of the machine. Mr Hughes is recognised as a breeder of high quality stock, and the introduction of this “up to the minute” hatching equipment will make a visit to his farm interesting as well as profitable. A large number of poultry enthusiasts have been waiting for the installation of this machine, and Mr and Mrs Hughes anticipate many visitors now that the machine can be seen in operation. BASKETBALL.
