Thomas) placed before the Board the syllabus of the new School Certificate examination, which wculd be held by the University at the same time as the University Entrance examination. The standard of both examinations would be similar, but the School Certificate gave a much wider choice of subjects with only English compulsory. Owing to a difference of opinion concerning “bona fide” pupils, the secondary schools football tournament would not be held this year. The Waitaki matches had been arranged for July 18. The chairman said that he had noticed by the paper that the Accountants’ Society was not. inclined to accept the new School Certificate. Mr Virtue expressed the opinion that the business houses would take a long time to become accustomed to the new examination. They were now obsessed with the matriculation examination. The Board should not be disheartened on that account, however. The report was adopted. The Lady Principal (Miss J. R. Barr) reported that the attendance had been affected by the prevalence of influenza, colds and measles, but it was almost back to normal again. During her absence on sick leave, Miss King, of the staff, and Miss Shires, at the home, had carried on, and Miss Barr expressed appreciation of the excellence of their work. It was agreed to congratulate Miss King and Miss Shires on the efficient manner in ■which they had carried on the work of the school. The report was adopted.
