TEMUKA

TRAPPING OF TROUT RIVERS CARRYING TOO MUCH WATER Preparations for the trout spawning season in South Canterbury, conducted under the supervision of the Acclimatisation Society’s curator, Mr P, W. Pellett, have been completed at the hatchery at Temuka. The traps were placed in the rivers some weeks ago, and although the “run” has commenced, the fish are not yet sufficiently matured for the taking of ova. Mr Pellett said yesterday that at present the Opihi and Temuka Rivers were carrying too large a volume of water to allow trapping. OAK LEAF JUVENILE LODGE. A.D. Bro. G. Duck shooting activities have eased off during the last fortnight, thereby strengthening the contention that the season loses much of its appeal after the first few days. Ducks are plentiful on the ponds in the Temuka district, though shootin_ appears to be confined chiefly to land-owners. • UNEMPLOYMENT. Advice has been received from the Unemployment Board that all men who would ordinarily have been engaged at relief work on June 4, the King’s birthday, shall be granted one day’s wages without work. Although it is but six weeks since it was topdressed, the grass on the croquet and bowling greens at the Domain was on Tuesday cut by motor mower, indicating the unusually rapid growth of grass for the time of year. The tar-sealing of Wilkin Street from near St. Joseph’s Church to the North Town Belt has been completed. A DOUBLE FEATURE PROGRAMME. "Counsel’s Opinion,” the new Paramount release, to be shown in Temuka to-night, is one of the most entertaining comedies yet made for the screen. It is a screen version of the famous stage success, and will undoubtedly prove as big a success as its famous stage predecessor. An interesting feature of this film is the faithful legal atmosphere, which is correct in every detail. For those who crave bristling action, smashing conflict and thundering drama, “Life in the Raw” has been made to order! This Fox film, vitalised by George O'Brien from the inimitable pen of Zane Grey is the second feature. A public meeting of town and country residents to discuss the question of unemployment and relief will be held in the Druids’ Hall on Tuesday, at 8 p.m. Mr E. cholerton, Optical Specialist, proprietor of John R. Procter, Ltd., the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Temuka personally, and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel on all optical defects, on Saturday, 26th May.
