WAIMATE

BOROUGH COUNCIL general business A meeting of the Waimate Borough Council was held on Tuesday night. Present—The Mayor (Mr G. Dash), and Crs. A. J. Hoskins, J. T. Hay, S. G. Reid, W. G. Paul and A. W. Good. The Mayor moved that a letter of congratulation be forwarded to Mr Norton Francis, a former resident of Waimate, who had occupied the Mayoral chair for two periods, on his appointment as one of the representatives of industry and commerce on the directorate of the Central Reserve Bank of New Zealand.—Carried. The Timaru A. and P. Association forwarded copies of a report brought down on methods of financing hospital boards, and recommendations thereon. On the motion of Cr. Hoskins, it was decided that individual councillors should study the report, and discuss it at the next meeting. The Waimate branch of the Farmers’ Union wrote tendering- its thanks for the attention given to the matter of dealing with stray dogs, and also suggesting that before being destroyed, a description of each dog should be advertised to prevent the possible loss of a valuable animal.—Received. The borough solicitor wrote forwarding details of the land titles of the sections proposed to be taken over by the Council at Huru Huru’s Maori cemetery. As the cost of completing the titles would be about £2O, he required instructions before proceeding further. The Mayor said that in all the circumstances, seeing that access had to be obtained to the cemetery, the best policy appeared to be to purchase the section for £2O. Cr. Hoskins said that £2O seemed to be a lot to pay for quarter of an acre in that locality. Cr. Reid said that a certain duty rested on the present generation to preserve such spaces. After a short discussion, the matter was referred to the general committee. A Resignation. Miss G. Haslam wrote tendering her resignation owing to her approaching marriage. The Mayor stated that during the eight years Miss Haslam had been in the service of the borough her work had been most accurate and reliable. Miss Haslam had cheerfully undertaken the extra work involved in the various unemployment schemes, and personally he ha l never met a more obliging person. Each councillor present endorsed the Mayor’s remarks, after which Miss Haslam returned thanks for the great assistance she had received from all the administrative officials of the Council. The resignation was accepted, and the question of a successor to Miss Haslam was left in the hands of the general committee. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Magistrate's Court, Waimate, yesterday morning, before Messrs F. Pollock and J. T. Hay, J’s.P., Edward Joseph Duggan was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having no lawful means of support. The police evidence went to show that accused had been loitering round the town for about a month begging money, and had gone into a shop the previous evening on the same errand. Constable Voyce had later arrested him in an hotel. After reviewing accused’s record, the Bench entered a conviction and imposed a sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
