PRIMARY v. SECONDARY INDUSTRIES

To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald " Sir, —Our old friend Mr A. E. Mander, secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, in an address to the Rotary Club in Dunedin, is stated in “The Timaru Herald” of May 18, to have made the following remarks: “There are about 66.000 persons engaged in the dairying industry, and over 66,000 persons engaged in manufacturing industries. The value of exports of butter and cheese for 1932 was approximately £20,250,000. In the same year, he estimates the value of the products of secondary industries at £43,000.000. After deducting value of raw material, the added value alone was nearly £25,000,000.” Quite so. But what about the dairy produce supplied to the local market? And when Mr Mander next supplies a few figures will he tell us what would be the value of dairy produce if provided under the same wages and conditions as secondary industries.—l am. etc., COW COCKY.
