FIRE BRIGADE JUBILEE CELEBRATION IN OCTOBER That next Labour Day week-end would be a suitable occasion for conducting the Brigade’s diamond jubilee celebrations was suggested at the fortnightly meeting of the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade, when Captain J. Allfrey occupied the chair. Several opinions as to an adequate programme of commemoration were expressed by firemen, and it was agreed to leave the question for further discussion at a> later meeting. Captain Allfrey declared Fireman F. Ives the winner of the challenge cup for a one-man coupling event, and congratulated him on the good time recorded. Correspondence was received from the Gore Brigade inquiring the amount of the annual grant allotted the Temuka Brigade by the Borough Council. AROWHENUA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Arowhenua Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Arowhenua Maori Hall on Monday, when Mrs Paipeta presided over a good attendance of members and friends. Mrs H. Taipana and Miss Torepe were nominated as members. Invitations to attend their annual birthday parties were received from the Waitohi and Hilton Institutes, while the Winchester Institute wrote inviting members to attend its next general meeting. A decision was made to contribute towards the cost of refreshments at the exhibition which is to be held at Timaru. Mrs J. Waites gave a very interesting demonstration of advanced papier mache work and was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions, judged by Mesdames J. Waites and J. Pemberton, resulted:—Best bowl of winter flowers, Mrs McCullough 1, Mrs Paipeta 2. Best knitted scarf, Mrs Shaw 1, Mrs Waters 2. It was announced by the president that the executive had arranged to hold a euchre party and dance. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames W. Mihaka and Waters, and Misses A. FIRE BRIGADE DEMONSTRATION. The f.nals of the one-man coupling event, ran to Gilberd Memorial schedule unefer fire-fighting conditions, for the Tenuka Volunteer Fire Brigade’s challenge cup were watched by an interested crowd in Commerce Street on Monday evening. A high standard of efficienc: was shown by the competitors while the times returned were an improvemeit on those recorded at the previous demonstration. The cup was won by Fireman F. Ives whose time was thrte-fifths of a second better than thit of Foreman F. Chapman Lieut. D Cain and Fireman W. Ives were thi examiners, while Mr W. J. Keys was timekeeper. Excellent music played hr the Temuka Municipal Band under Bmdmaster R. G. Allan add?d interest ;o the proceedings. • HOCKEY CLUBS. At a neeting of the Temuka Men’s Hockey Club, at which Mr S. B. Reid presided, it was decided to allow the delegates to the Geraldine Sub-Asso-ciation, Hessrs Reid and W. Searle, to use theii own discretion when voting as to whither the match with the Australian bam should be played at Geraldint or Temuka. The apearance at the Dominion Theatre in Monday evening of the Maori M,le Voice Choir, which is at present buring New Zealand in an effort to ncrease interest in Methodist Maori aid Home Missions, produced a large am appreciative audience. The individua items and choral numbers were of high standard. The artists were Mesrs W. Nerehana, Tutawhiao, Inia andTe Uitata, Akango Pihana, Te Mati Tepuaha. DRUIDS’ SOCIAL. A socia in the Druids’ Hall attracted a large lumber of card-players and dancers. Prizes for cards were won by Mesdame;Cain and Talbot, and Messrs F. Lamb md A. R. Beck. Mr K. Magistrate's Court yesterday, and all were settled privately, no Court being held. MILD WEATHER. Moderate weather on Monday was followed by unusually mild and extremely pleasant conditions yesterday. No frost was recorded and the early morning was typically springlike. At 10 o’clock a temperature of 82 degrees in the sun was registered, but with the sky becoming overcast, fell to 72 degrees at noon. A slight southerly prevailed in the afternoon when the temperature again decreased, though the mildness of the weather was a topic of conversa- , tion. GENERAL NEWS.
