ARAPUNI PLANT

ADDITIONS PROPOSED. By Telegraph —Press Association AUCKLAND. May 22. After a long silence on the subject, the Auckland Electric Power Board yesterday discussed the Arapuni plant, but from a different point of view. Mr E. H. Potter drew the attention of the chairman to a recent newspaper report that the Government was considering the installation of two more units at Arapuni. Mr W. J. Holdsworth: I do not think that the Government intends any addition at Arapuni. The general manager said that the Government actually did have that intention. Now that the main expenditure was over the Government would be wise in using what power was there. It had under consideration the putting in of two units of 15,000 kilowatts each. It was doing that so that Arapuni could assist Waikaremoana and the other southern stations if the need arose. The linking of Arapuni with Waikaremoana and Mangahao originally had been done so that, should anything happen to Arapuni, Mangahao could assist; but now the position seemed to have been reversed. Other board members said that the views once expressed by pessimists had been refuted. Mr J. Park thought differently. Waikaremoana and Mangahao, he said, were two “duds” and the Government was just hoping to goodness that Arapuni would bear the load.
